Until the End of Time
Daily Prompt: No Longer a Mere Mortal – You’ve imbibed a special potion that makes you immortal. Now that you’ve got forever, what changes will you make in your life? How will you live life differently, knowing you’ll always be around to be accountable for your actions?
June 2013
A potion of eternal youth! Can this be true? I drank it, but don’t feel any different. Time will tell.
February 2014
Slipped down the stairs today, felt my neck crack. My body went numb. Seconds later I felt a tingling – my neck has healed. The potion was real! I can’t die.
I can’t die!
I must make plans.
September 2014
Everything is in place. I have made careful investments. I must make enough money to buy property. I must be careful – no-one must learn of my immortality.
March 2034
My properties are now in place – I have houses in three countries. To do so much so fast required taking risks, though I must be careful – imagine life in prison when life is forever!
January 2056
The last of my friends has died. I attended the funeral in the guise of my non-existent son. It is sad, but I’m sure I shall make new friends!
October 2112
I have been pretty much everywhere and seen everything. I have tried to find excitement through extreme sports and activities, but where is the fun when there is no risk?
July 2198
Everyone on Earth is “connected” – implants. I can’t risk that. I have to stay under the radar. I have become a recluse. I feel so alone.
November 2258
I have left Earth bound for the Outer Colonies. A fresh start. It was hard to leave my home behind, but it’s not what it once was – the three day war with the Eurasian Alliance devastated so much. It hurts to live there now.
7 Awakening 912
The Colonies are beautiful, though the life is a hard one. I just buried my 17th wife. No more. I can’t bury any more of my loved ones.
11 Awakening 1903
I heard today that I can never go home again. The sun finally ran out of fuel and expanded as a gas giant. Mercury, Venus and Earth were swallowed whole. I feel… nothing. I have felt nothing for such a long time.

The last of my race has died. I am the last human in the universe. I want to die, but that ultimate rest is denied me. I curse that potion, as I have these past millions of years.
Year unknown
The last of the stars has flickered and died. I drift through the infinite blackness.
Helpless.
Alone.
Forever.
Waiting to comment, left me feeling unsettled.
Very good story teller.

Thanks!
I think the moral of this story is “be careful what you wish for”.

So much hope there…and then, bam! You’re alone 😦
So much for that potion….we curse it, my precious!

As usual, I went “dark” for my Daily Prompt submission!
My potion was indeed very much like “my precious” – both it and the “One Ring” looked great on the surface but had a nasty sting in the tail.

Hmm….you must have seen my wedding ring then 😀

Immortality sounds rather cool until you take it to its ultimate conclusion…

Yes, exactly! I think it would get old very quickly, pun intended.

You must have shared it with one other being at least..
A very creative imagination.. the story turns out to be intriguing, then suspenseful and then horrific in the end.

It is a bit unclear who’s left in the universe to read this at the end of the story…
Glad you liked it!

Intense dude. I only hope our immortal protagonist does not get The Girl From Ipanema or The Macarena stuck in his head.

An eternity with the earworm from hell!
Instead of a sad image of the protagonist drifting through space forever, I now have an image of him spinning end over end through the blackness doing the Macarena…

Bloody brilliant – Immediately have the “who wants to live forever” song as a meme in my head. Eternity with Freddie Mercury 🙂

And now I suddenly want to watch Highlander (this song was featured in the soundtrack) 🙂
Bloody great film.

Living forever is one of those things that we all think we want, but when you look at it realistically – like you have – it’s not so great. Unless you have someone to live forever with you!!!

Ooh yes, it would be cool if you had a lovely someone to spend eternity with 🙂

No, it doesn’t bear thinking about. A pretty terrible fate.

I hadn’t read this before. Just followed the link on your ‘Share your world’. Great tale, really brings the reality of it home 🙂

“Living forever” means exactly that. Sooner or later there will be nothing but you left 😦

Pretty bleak, I’d say. A definite cautionary tale (and very similar to the reasoning my husband used talking with the kidlet). And here I was thinking, at the beginning, that he (presumably not a mom impersonating her fake son) was going to be continually injured and have to carry around the injuries into infinity. It turns out, the injuries are much more mental–and devastating. It’s a great little short/flash story, Doctor Phillips, and I like the naming of the ‘awakening’ years, too.

Immortality isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Carrying around injuries forever would be awful too. I seem to remember something like that happening in a film, “Death Becomes Her” maybe?
I’m glad you liked it!
