Fade Away
Daily Prompt: Standout – When was the last time you really stood out in a crowd? Are you comfortable in that position, or do you wish you could fade into the woodwork?
I’ve had to struggle to remember the last time I stood out in any crowd. I think we’ll have to go back over ten years to “the dark drinking time”. Emboldened by Dutch Courage I was MC at a work pub quiz. I was the fill-in act – told jokes, gave away prizes, that sort of thing. Apparently I was quite good!
One year for a university Christmas party I wrote a song (a spoof on the university to the music of the Eagles “Hotel California”) and got together some backing singers and some amateur musicians (physicists are less boring then one might expect!).
I then dressed up as a woman, called myself “Alison” and belted the song out. I figured that if people hated the song they’d at least have a laugh out of my high heels. After seeing some of the shots of myself on stage, mind, I was very glad I’d worn swimming trunks under the skirt.
I have concealed the faces of my partners in crime to protect the innocent.
Things have changed. Drastically. I’m now back to my “normal” self, if anyone can be considered normal.
Ninety-nine percent of my clothes are coloured in amazing shades of black, dark grey and blue. I sneak around in the background. I’ve been called “Ninja Ali”.
I had to think very carefully about buying a white car earlier this year. I finally gave in when I decided that when I’m driving, I actually do want people to see me coming.
I hate crowds. When I go into the teeming metropolis of my local city (population a little over 20,000 – eek!) I go in early, do what I gotta do, and am gone while most people are still finishing their Cornflakes.
There are very few pictures of me at work functions. “Spot the camera” is one of my superhero powers.
How will you fare spotting me in a crowd?
Nice gams. 🙂

Indeed it was!
I could also have been a lot more “buxom”, but I couldn’t find any more clean socks 🙂

oh that sounds so familiar… when I was young I loved the attention, then something happened… I am uncomfortable in crowds… and I also have a camera radar… when I got separated I went through all my clothes and noticed that I owned a lot of black, grey and neutral… so I went shopping and bought bright colours… I have decided that celebrating life is allowed, I still try not to draw too much attention though… I am generally the one hiding in the corner having a lovely one on one conversation pretending everyone else is gone… 🙂

I’m glad I’m not the only one! Maybe one day I shall also buy some bright colours to wear. But not today.

Someone said if you remember the 60s or 70s, you probably weren’t really there. For some of us, remembering several decades is a bit hazy, but I’m pretty sure we had fun. Sometimes, I only know I enjoyed and event — or was even AT the event — because someone else tells me and I find myself saying “Really? Did i have fun?” Because it’s a complete blank. Don’t remember a thing.
Today I am wearing a grey skirt and a black tee shirt. On a really outstanding day, I may wear (gasp) a tee shirt that isn’t black, gray or navy! Wow. The car is gray. The other car is yellow, or was. Kind of faded these days. My husband like bright cars, but I do believe the brightest color in his wardrobe is off white. And not much of that 🙂
But I am told I really had fun. I even remember some of it.

I do have snippets of memories from the 70s! I was only little, though.
Some things I remember quite well while other are also quite hazy. I know I used to wear white and colours, not sure what happened. I seem to remember that my favourites were always the darker colours, though.

I haven’t done this prompt yet because there are so many moments for me where I wished I disappeared into the woodwork, and then I forget them the moment they come to mind!

I do, don’t I 😉
It sounds like you’re suffering from selective memory there! It’s a great survival technique 🙂

I so understand about hanging around in the background. I do the same, don’t want to stand out. I also having the amazing colour wardrobe of, greys, blacks and on a really exciting day I might add a dash of white 🙂

I might occasionally have a bit of white about my person (not a whole t-shirt-full mind!).
Just enough so I don’t get run over after dark 🙂
