This week’s end of season finale on Prompts for the Promptless is all about the Johari Window.

The Johari Window is a method of representing information (regarding feelings, experiences, motivations, intentions, attitudes, etc) – from 4 specific perspectives.  It is a technique to help you understand how you are perceived by others, and how you see yourself.  The perspectives are as follows:

1. Open area: The things that you about yourself, that others also know about you.
2. Blind area: The things you don’t know about yourself, but others know.
3. Hidden area: The things you know about yourself that others do not know.
4. Unknown self: The things no one knows about you.

Let’s take these one at a time.

Open Area

I guess I can have a go at filling this one in! I know these things. Other people know these things. Obviously, if anything here was supposed to be secret, I didn’t do the best of jobs in keeping it. The cat’s already out of the bag.

Blind Area

Obviously, unless I ask someone else, I can’t fill this in as these are things “I don’t know about myself”. If I don’t know these things about myself, I can’t fill it in, now can I?

I’m not going to ask anyone else about these things to which I am “blind”, because I’m not sure I really want to know 😦

Hidden Area

I could fill this in, but then others would also know these things about myself. They’re probably hidden for a reason.

Unknown Self

This one is, by definition, blank.

I also have an issue with the Blind Area and the Hidden Area. If I filled either of these two in, they would be known by both myself and by others and therefore instantly belong in the Open Area. This is illogical, Captain. I’m getting confused by this window thing already and I haven’t even started it yet.

Never mind. Here is my Johari Window!

That’s all I have room for in my Open Area! I suppose I could also add “creative”, because apparently I am!
