New Flesh
It’s Friday and that means it’s time for Friday Fictioneers!
The goal is to write approximately 100 words, inspired by a photo which this week has been contributed by DLovering. Our host as always is Rochelle.
You can read all the other stories for this week by clicking on the little blue froggy. Here he is!
I’ve edited this a gazillion times and I’m still not entirely happy (I need about 30 more words!), but here it is anyway.
What with all this stuff at work I’m way behind with my reading but I promise I will try to catch up!
The festival was over. For Manuel it had been most profitable. Wallets, assorted watches, rings… one ring caught his attention. It looked old. Really old. There was an inscription, written in a script he had never seen before.
He’d taken it from an old, gaunt man whose skin had felt like paper, and so cold – wrong somehow – as Manuel had crushed the life from him.
He put the ring on, suppressing a shudder as it seemed to melt into his flesh.
Far away, Galchallon, Lord of the Dark, smiled. New flesh to do his bidding. A new soul upon which to feast.
Yes, I know, I went with yet another demonic possession. Weird, huh? What’s going on in this head of mine?
Demonic possessions aren’t a bad thing in this case. If you do it again next week, then we may start to worry about you 😉

I’ll do something else next week. Maybe a comedy demonic possession, in which the hideous demon X’Argchakoffle makes his minions do hilarious things at inopportune moments 🙂

Now, are you sure you aren’t really Joss Whedon?

Coincidentally, I just shoved a Buffy in the DVD player to watch while I eat my lunch 🙂

It’s series 6 (which I found when I moved house) near the end – Willow’s about to go after Warren on full magic overload. Woohoo 🙂

Two To Go? Or something like that…
I think after that season I wasn’t as happy with the show but then again, what else could they do now? Still good, subpar Buffy is still better than most things!
Have fun!

Not the best series (though I loved the musical episode, I love musicals), then series 7 went very dark, but as you say still good viewing!

Once More With Feeling is what I was thinking of when I wrote my original comment…so we’ve come full circle!

I decided to drop down to the last story and work my way back to where I left of, just for some variety. And I found variety in your look at the prompt. I like it. Although now I think I hear, “Put on the ring.” 🙂

Methinks he will live, then die, to regret such thievery and murder!

Methinks you are correct!

I tend to agree with Freya. He’ll go on living, but he’ll be wishing he were dead.

I think Manuel will have a great time at first, until the reality of what is happening sinks in. Then I’m sure he will spend the rest of his life wanting to die.

Oh Drailman, this is so good! The thief will be doing the bidding of another from now on. At least he released the last guy from misery (I hope). Good job and well done! Nan

I think the demon has indeed finished with the last guy. Sucked dry and discarded – now it’s Manuel’s turn.
I’m glad you enjoyed it!

He certainly did! Karma got him in the end.

I think all of the editing paid off! I loved the shudder as it melted into his flesh and evil Galchallon. Brilliant.

Thanks! That ring is evidently not going to come off 🙂

Hey, demon possession is a goldmine of fodder. You could write about it in a million ways, and it’ll always be fun. (At least that’s my take on it, hehe). Just goes to show what happens when you thieve your way to riches. A demon will go and take advantage of ya.

Thanks for forgiving my second demon possession in a row! They are fun (if they’re not real, of course dum dum DUM) 🙂
The demons always have their eyes peeled, waiting for the right “candidate”.

serves him right for robbing an old man! the cold papery skin is really creepy and the idea of killing someone/something that’s already cold.

I’m thinking all this is now in Manuel’s future. I have no sympathy for him either!

it’s quite possible. 🙂 Al, i know you like the horror genre and i was wondering if you’d be interested in an advanced review copy of 100 Nightmares, in exchange for a review on amazon or smashwords and goodreads (whichever you prefer). you’ll get a free epub version before it hits Amazon/Smashwords. Let me know. crazyaboutmiumiu2@yahoo.com thank you! 🙂

AH.. the thief ripes his reward.. I can see Manuel wither as his flesh is slowly consumed in deamon possesion.

Soon he’ll be just like the previous wearer of the ring, with a similar fate in store I expect.

I’m a sucker for this kind of tale: old rings, ancient men, … a wrong’un to be banged to rights … Well done. This could be expanded. 🙂

He’s certainly going to get what’s coming to him!
I think after reading Lord of the Rings decades ago I also fell in love with rings of ancient power.

Dear Ali, my precious,
First you have my undying affection for editing “a gazillion times.” I thought your story worked well. And it’s serves Manuel right for taking what he’s done.

Dear Rochelle,
I think the work limit is ideal for forcing us to polish our stories. With the original story, which was well over the limit, the story worked, but once I’d been forced to cut it down by editing over and over, needing to reword the whole thing to make it fit, it was a whole lot better!
I like it when nasty dudes get their comeuppance 🙂

Al, you’ve done it again. You’ve brought a demon to possess someone. 🙂 This guy seemed to deserve it though. Stephen King has been writing horror for years and no one complains, so you don’t always have to switch to a different genre if you’re doing well. Of course, if you want to try something else that okay also. I personally switch sometimes with the different prompts. Well done. 🙂

I’m currently watching Buffy from start to finish – I think it’s influencing my stories 🙂
I’d certainly like to try some humour again soon, I’m just waiting for a photo to spark one off. But true, I’m certainly not the only one (even within FF) who does several horror stories in a row.
Thanks 🙂

Hi Al, enjoyed the story and I certainly don’t mind a bit of demonic possession here and there. I don’t know what the body count this week in FF would be or if it is going up or down from previous weeks, but it might be funny if someone (not me) compiled the stats. 🙂

Yeah, that would be a fun stat to track!
