Blurred Reality
Here is my Friday Fictioneers submission for this week, hosted as always by the talented Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Ted Strutz, to which we need to write a story of roughly 100 words.
This week’s photo appears to feature some dentistry tools. Sorry to be a bit obvious in my story, but I’m not passing this one up.
To read this week’s other submissions, click on the little blue froggy (whose name is Bracken).
The whirring of the drill rang in Simon’s ears as The Dentist’s leering face loomed before his eyes.
“Pain!” laughed The Dentist, chief “agony technician” of the Vekta Crew. “You shall feel… such pain!” Simon closed his eyes in terror and felt…
… someone shaking his shoulder.
“Wake up, honey! You’re having a bad dream!”
Simon opened his eyes to see his wife looking down at him.
“That was a bad one!” he smiled.
His wife’s eyes grew cold. “Or is this the dream?” she snarled, her face morphing into that of The Dentist.
Simon screamed as the drill bore down into the sensitive pulp of his tooth.
You gave fair warning, and I read it anyway. Well done though. My teeth cringed, if that’s possible! (I hate having to go to the dentist still…always ends in pain and loss of money)

The photo was tailor-made for a nasty dentist tale 🙂

Oh thank-you for this one… as if I don’t hate going to the dentist enough already!? 😉

It’s okay, most dentists only cause you pain accidentally 🙂

are you sure about that?

Nope 🙂

Heckaroony!!! That one made me shudder. I haven’t been to the dentist in a while, I think I’ll just leave it a bit longer now 🙂

I’m really good at putting off visits to the dentist!

That was amazing and totally unexpected. I’ve had those dreams too, where you think you’ve woken up but you haven’t – brilliantly done 🙂

I call them “multi-layer dreams”, and funnily enough they are always, without fail, about my teeth falling out 🙂

“You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch…”
And it’s not even Christmas yet! Great job on the prompt – enough to give me flashbacks of Dustin Hoffman in the Running Man… 🙂

I couldn’t let him just wake up and be okay 🙂
I’ve never actually seen Marathon Man, though it went through my mind as I wrote. I think when I heard about it I was too scared to watch it.

I haven’t seen Running Man in its entirety either. Unfortunately they only show the cringe-worthy scenes, which is probably why, even if I probably did see the whole movie, that’s all I remember, complete with the toe curling cringes 🙂

All it needs is a psychotic talking plant in the corner 🙂

I need to find one of those for “special” occasions.

A ficus is all very well, but there’s definitely no substitute for a homicidal talking plant.

Al, I really, really didn’t need that piece. Anyway, it was well written. 🙂 —Susan

I’ve got goose-pimples up my arms reading this. Sometimes you think you’ve emerged from a nightmare and then you find out you haven’t really.

Yes, that’s happened to me more than once 😦

To sleep, perchance to be horrified. Nice work.

Thanks! I hate “waking up but actually still asleep experiences”. Especially if I find myself in a situation like that 🙂

Aaaaaah! I really hope that was all part of the dream. I would like to say it was nicely evocative, but have to say instead that it was excruciatingly evocative – though I mean that as a compliment 🙂

I left it a bit open as to what is dream and what is reality – we can only hope for his sake that he’s still asleep 🙂
Thanks!

No, they have you completely in their power. All you can do is sit there and try not to scream.

Nothing could be creepier than to think you’re waking up from a nightmare and you realize that you really are in a nightmare for real! Excellent writing! Nan 🙂

Very true. A moment of relief – “it was all a dream!” – followed by the dreadful realisation that it wasn’t.
Thanks!

Thanks. I’m not anti dentist in general either, but the photo drew me in the tooth torture direction.

I am a fan of horror films, how could you tell? 🙂 Though it’s difficult to find ones which really horrify. It’s all in the build-up and the suspense.

I’m also an avid fan of horror films!! My favourite “The Descent” – if that doesn’t get your heart pounding I don’t know what will!?!? 🙂
Do you like the Paranormal series?
Yay, tis’ a rare thing to find another fan of horror films!

You must watch it. As a fellow horror movie buff, this is one hell of a scary film. All of the elements are perfectly executed. Capital T – terrifying!
Extra bonus – the 2nd one is just as good and, for once, a sequel worth watching.
It’s so good we’re hoping they make a 3rd!! 🙂
I’m really excited for you to see them, definitely let me know what you think when you do!
