Sharing my World Week 40
Week 40 already! I wonder how many sleeps there are until Christmas…?
Here’s my answers to Cee’s questions for this week on Share Your World. Thanks for posing the questions, Cee!
You’re given $500,000 dollars tax free (any currency), what do you spend it on?
“Money money money, It’s a rich man’s world” as Abba famously sang in 1976. $500,000 was probably a huge amount of money in 1976 too.

Tax free? Awesome! First, I need to convert it to pounds so I know how much I’m actually getting – £311,000. It doesn’t sound so much now, but still enough to have fun with! That’s enough to buy a house at the current average house price, with some left over for a car and holiday of a lifetime!
I’d pay off my mortgage, credit cards and so on. That would leave me with some money in the bank and lots of monthly disposable income. I’d maybe have a nice holiday in New Zealand to visit the Hobbits.
What’s the finest education?
Oxbridge? The University of Life? The School of Hard Knocks?
Whatever works for you and lets you get what you want out of life, I suppose.
What kind of art is your favourite? Why?
I don’t really have a favourite. I like different kinds of paintings, different kinds of music, sculptures, literature (if you can call the stuff I read “literature”). I know what I like when I see/hear/read it. That’s my favourite. What I like.
Is there something that you memorized long ago and still remember?
Nope.
You want more? Okay then. “Seasons of mist and mellow fruitfulness, close bosom friend of the maturing sun.” That’s all I got.
I’m hopeless at remembering stuff from long ago. I have friends who seem to remember all sorts of quotes and so on. Not me. I can’t even remember stuff from very recently.
Umm, banana? Pencil sharpener, there’s always a pencil sharpener. Stuffed Aardvark? I’m sure there was a stuffed aardvark…
On the other hand, I can quote most of “Black Adder” and “Red Dwarf” off the top of my head. Very useful.

With everything, it’s pretty much “I like what I like”. I don’t care if it’s “in”, “out” or whatever. If I like it, I like it!

Oh, I have the same approach to art too. That’s why I can’t narrow down my favorite artist or work. Same as asking my favorite song, too many to choose from!

Ah, Abba…I remember my grandfather taking me to the Abba movie because no other grown up would take me and he couldn’t understand why I liked the songs. But he sat through the whole thing, poor man. Now we’re really dating ourselves!

Yeah, I’d love a trip to New Zealand, it looks so beautiful, and seeing the Hobbitses would be a bonus!
I’ve always been a huge Abba fan, even to this day. The very first album I bought (on cassette tape) with my own saved up pocket money was “Super Trouper”.

Ah…cassette tapes! I remember those days – though those days are back for me as my mother just sent me a box of children’s books from 20 years ago she never opened (for my 4-year old) and in the box were cassette tapes to go with the books. And so we had to hunt down the stereo cassette player from the garage so my little one can play the tapes on his own.
It’s definitely retro in my house right now – so maybe I should hunt down my old ABBA cassette tapes and see what he thinks? I still have Cheech and Chong 🙂

Ali, Money always comes in handy. I’d like to buy a condo in the U.S. to move to some day if and when I go back. It’s iffy because I’d have to be a widow, and my husband may outlive me. The only education I’d be interested in now are courses in writing, perhaps even online. I also like all kinds of art and music. I know what I like. I feel lucky some days to remember my name. I used to laugh because our son would memorize pieces from Monty Python and the do them in the British accent to get me to laugh. Both my kids probably inherited my husband’s intelligence. I could always memorize, but it would slip away if I didn’t use it. I have prayers I’ve memorized for my own good. These days I make a lot of notes. Wonderful things pens, pencils, and paper. 🙂 Susan

I’ve sometimes thought about doing a writing course. Then I worry they might try to make me write about stuff I don’t want to write about, like “feelings” or something 🙂
I tend to write a lot down, too. I have a block of paper next to me just in case.

Interesting. I’ld buy a small RV, very compact and travel to all the back country. I crave being outside in new places.
I’ve no debt, so Im ok.
Is architecture art, I think so. I think bridges are art also.
I thought brains could remember everything, that was partly why they are smart. Wow interesting.

Travelling around in an RV sounds like fun, except I’d miss the speed and cool acceleration you get from a car (hence my car upgrade last week to a Fiesta ST-3!).
I can remember some things and not others. Names, I’m hopeless at. I forget poems and stuff like that, but I can locate a specific algorithm inside hundreds of thousands of lines of computer code in seconds.

Algorithm … not a clue, reads like a monster.
On CBS this morning there was a discussion on how brains like yours that can decipher/write in math codes yet have a big interest in liberal arts are the best innovative brains out there.
Talked how Steve Jobs had that type of interest in his life.

It does sound like a monster! It’s a “step-by-step procedure for calculations”.
That’s cool, I always thought it was a bit weird that I could do programming and physics but liked writing as well.

I haven’t written about it yet. I got a great deal with Ford and traded in my car early for a dark blue Fiesta ST-3. It wouldn’t work well on dirt roads though!
