It’s Unicorn Appreciation Day!

It’s January 11th, and we all know what that means, don’t we?

Yes, it’s Unicorn Appreciation Day (UAD)! We will be celebrating here with pictures, poems and fun facts. So, let’s begin with a picture of the magnificent beast.

Unicorn

The unicorn, in all its magnificence

Hmm, I don’t think the DraliDoodle team has quite captured its full majesty. Apparently they “don’t do horsies”. Never mind, let’s have the first of our poems. This one’s from the DraliDoodle team.

Tablet ready
Stylus in hand, sketching, colouring
pointy horn.

Well, that was an epic fail, both words and picture.

FUN FACT! After being hunted almost to extinction, unicorns numbers are increasing as they are a protected species. They are only hunted by the residents of a certain populous island, and only for “research purposes”.

JOKE! What do you call a unicorn without a horn? A horse! Ha ha ha.

Blogs are expensive to run and “draliman on life” is no exception, so please bear with us while we hear from our sponsor.

UniBurgersInc

Oh no. That wasn’t very appropriate, was it? I do apologise. But we need the money. Let’s move quickly on to the second of our poems, this time contributed by the DraliRomance team.

I dream
of your glossy coat, your liquid eyes, your huge
pointy horn.

The DraliRomance team has only ever had one outing on this blog and now we know why. Back in your box, DraliRomance team! Let’s try one from the DraliHorror team.

Rearing high in dark shadows
Hooves smashing, vicious ripping
pointy horn.

Yeah, that’s more like it!

FUN FACT! Did you know that a baby unicorn is correctly called a “babycorn”?

I wonder how people celebrate UAD? Here’s a picture of UAD celebrations in a typical English town. I bet everyone is having a fun time!

Unicorn Celebrations

It doesn’t really look like family fun. At least they are all wearing the traditional unicorn headpiece, even if one enterprising chap is using it as a weapon. Let’s hear from the DraliKids team.

Glossy, cuddly
Friend to kids and bunny wabbits, catching rainbows with
pointy horn.

See, that’s more like it. At least they’re getting in the mood.

FUN FACT! Unicorns can be safely approached in the wild, but beware if they have their babycorns with them. Don’t approach during the mating season, as no-one likes to be disturbed while they’re having the rumpy pumpy.

We’ll end our unicorn fun with a poem from the DraliOffice fire marshals.

Burning, hot tongues blazing
Flesh melting, all that’s left
pointy horn.

Yoinks! It appears that all the fire marshals are members of the DraliHorror team.

I hope you all enjoyed our look at that most magical of holidays, Unicorn Appreciation Day!

      Happy UAD to you too!
If every day were UAD, it would lose its lustre! And that post took me ages 🙂

This typical English town, it wouldn’t be Barking would it…?! I like the pub, hope it’s The Unicorn.
Do the burgers taste like chicken I wonder? 😉 🙂

Ha, it might be :-). The pub is definitely The Unicorn, where better to celebrate?
Every weird meat tastes like chicken! I’ve not tried unicorn burgers though, that would be wrong.

Ali, Another day to appreciate something and/or someone. The card companies and gift shops will love you. A question: Is the uniberger served with the horn on the side? Just asking. I take it your DraliDoodles are classified as folk art. Craziness abounds. One of your funniest pieces ever. 😀 🙂 — Suzanne

I think the horn is extra, it’s quite sought-after.
There was definitely room in the calender for another holiday, something to fill the gap between New Year and Valentine’s Day. I think Goldfish chose 11/1 (or 1/11 as the Americans call it) because the “1” looks like a unicorn horn (and she’s a unicorn fan) 🙂
Glad it gave you a laugh!

This was hilarious, as per you usually are. I tried to draw a unicorn and it was an epic fail. You should have seen it…before I erased it while in tears. 🙂

I always approach art knowing it’s going to be terrible (I’ve never been able to draw) and therefore I am always happy with the result! My unicorn took a good 20 seconds to create 🙂

I hear that they are, but you’ll have to wade past scores of “Save the Unicorns” protesters to get to them!

I was going to write about this too, but I felt inadequate to the task. But I’m glad to see that you were inspired. I do like your last poem-let. It has a solid, meaty quality that suits you. I am going to take a picture of my pet unicorn and post is, just so I can feel like a participant in the celebration. Happy UAD!!

That Dralicorn is quite majestic. RD can appreciate a poorly drawn unicorn better than most given the horrific way he turned out the first time I tried to draw him. I also like your twisted take on the holiday… it reminds me of the time I put Rainbow Donkey through the meat grinder in a comic…

Maybe if I keep practising, Dralicorn will achieve RD standards.
Literally through the meat grinder? 😦

haha! Love me some politically incorrectness. Even more now. Having said that I will not be ordering a burger. Can you believe they have croc burgers at the aussie croc zoo?
Tourists can chow down on a croc which is sort of fair considering how many tourists they eat every year. ps. If you come to Australia please don’t get drunk and go swimming in the rivers. ❤

That sounds wrong 😦 You could imagine you’re eating some poor croc who met an unfortunate end and now you’re happily watching his mates swimming around.
No swimming in Australian rivers, got it 🙂

Happy UAD! which it seems according to the typical English town depiction is a great excuse to drink far too much and vomit in public, or practice urinating in water fountains, or getting into an all out brawl using your precious Unicorn headgear as a weapon of death and destruction… Oh the horror! urine, blood and vomit everywhere!!!
Perhaps here in Canada we will just somberly (and soberly) appreciate the beauty that is the Unicorn and maybe drink some tea and take a nap while thinking of glittery rainbows. 🙂

The Canadian celebration sounds much more my thing. Far less dangerous and it includes a nice nap which I’m always up for 🙂

That post was a great team effort by the whole of Drali Industries (?)! Although the poem by the DraliDoodle team suggests that they should not venture outside of their PDs, and leave the poem writing to the departments who are being paid to do it.

They tried their best but their poems are, if such a thing is possible, even worse than their drawings!

I wouldn’t be too dismissive of their drawings, they are done in a very unique style that will probably only be fully appreciated by art critics after they have died. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an image generated by a stylus and tablet capture moods and emotions with such nuance! I’ll come over to the UK when the Tate holds a retrospective exhibition of the team’s entire works, entitled “Dralidoodles”.

The team put their whole heart and soul into their drawings! There’s a branch of the Tate a few miles away (St Ives, Cornwall) but they’ve stopped taking my calls 😦
I’ll let you know once the team has died and their works are hung in pride of place!

PS, I meant that their style may only be appreciated by art critics after the DraliDoodle team have passed away, not after the art critics have passed away, because that would just be silly.

At least if they were dead the critics wouldn’t have to explain why they think the DraliDoodles are so spectacular!
