Sharing My World 2015 Week 10

It’s time again to Share My World, part of Share Your World hosted by talented photographer Cee over at her photography site.

When you lose electricity in a storm, do you light the candles or turn on the flashlight? How many of each do you own?
The last time we lost electricity in a storm was around 30-40 years ago I think. However, now that I live in a small village, I guess there is more chance of it.

I like candles but don’t currently have any. They got chucked when I moved house. I have plenty of torches, though, secreted in strategic locations. One in my work bag, one in my car, one in the kitchen drawer and one in my bedside table. And they all work!

You are given $5,000 and the chance to exchange it for one of two envelopes. One envelope contains $50,000 and one contains $500. Do you make the trade? Why or why not?
I just did the conversion, and while $5000 sounds like a lot, it’s actually less than £3400. However, I reckon I’d still keep it. I’m not much of a gambler and “a bird in the hand” and so on. 50/50 isn’t great odds. That much money is immediately 2 months grace in case I suddenly can’t work but still need to pay my mortgage and so on.

On the other hand, with a ton of cash I could take advantage of this amazing offer that came through the post the other day.

Royal Mint Offer

One of only 100 people! Limited issue! Platinum! This is too good to pass up, surely. Then I turned it over and saw this.

Royal Mint Price

Um, exsqueeze me? How much now? They’re obviously mistaking me for that Mr Draliman who lives down the road who’s so rich his kids’ bunny rabbits sleep on a bed made out of shredded £50 notes.

Looking at the amount of money I currently save each month, it would take me infinity months to save up this much. Because that’s what you get when divide £12,500 by zero. Infinity.

What’s your first memory?
Memories can be funny things. Did they really happen? Have they been distorted over time?

I do remember one time when my brother had his birthday read out on “Gus Honeybun’s Magic Birthdays” on the TV. It was at the house in Carnon Downs, so I was five maximum.

Gus was the station mascot for the now defunct “Westward Television” and then the similarly defunct “Television South West”.

What do you do if you can’t sleep at night? Do you count sheep, toss and turn, or get up and try to do something?
Sorry to give the same answer as everybody else, but I read. I never, ever go to sleep without reading first, no matter how late it is.

See you all next week!

I’ll take the £3400 thanks. That equates to $6564 AU. My first memory is, I think, stealing baking black jelly beans from the big bulk supply in my parent’s mixed business. Back then, everything had to be weighed and measured. I think I was about three at the time–I still like black jelly beans 🙂 Yep, reading is what I do every night until my eyelids start to close. It’s fun reading about your week and some of your habits.

Ooh, sounds like you were a naughty toddler, nicking all those jelly beans 🙂 I always read until I’m too sleepy to keep going. Works (almost) every time!

Well, they were just sitting there in a big open jar right at my height. I mean, what’s a girl to do? 😀

I think you’re wise, Ali, to keep the money. How fortunate you are to live where there’s a dependable source of electricity. I used to, but now any more. I bet your brother was excited that his birthday was read on TV. 🙂

It’s always exciting to hear your name on TV. And you could request that Gus did something, like a handstand 🙂

I just had a brilliant idea to market my spare change as priceless, limited edition, commemorative coins! I can make a fortune off of the suckers who are supposedly born every minute…

Wouldn’t it be never, not infinity?

Like y’all, I would take the money and run, even if that does give me a Steve Miller earworm everytime I read or type that.

I suppose an infinity of time is never 🙂

A commemorative set like that? You should be willing to mortgage your soul to own it! Apparently other people are … or is this the kind of deal where they figure if one fool buys it, they’ve already cleaned up?

I think I’d have to mortgage more than my soul for it! There are “cheaper” sets available in the cheaper metals (gold and silver).
The problem is that it’s guaranteed “whatever proof” (the Royal Mint is the company which mints all British coins) so it probably is worth about that in actual metal, it’s so pure.

I think I’d rather have the money 🙂

We’ve had the odd power cut here over the years but my husband has us stocked up with enough candles, torches and paraffin lamps to light the whole village. I would have taken the £3400 and run, too. I’ve not got a gambling bone in my body. And as for Gus Honeybun – I don’t think he ever travelled ‘up north’. 🙂

Yours is the place to go in a power cut then!
Gus was strictly a West Country bunny 🙂

Yes, we’re definitely well provisioned in the emergency lighting department. I think Gus was just being a territorial bunny. He probably liked your Cornish climate. 🙂

My first memory, I was three. I was sitting on Mom’s bed. She was telling me a very good friend of hers had died of cancer. He was someone we both loved a lot. Unfortunately that’s the only memory I have of him.

Hey your savings plan sounds very similar to mine! I am a bonafide nillionare! (that is some-one with nil savings) Woohoo! infinity years to riches! I’d take the 5,000 and run baby.

Memories are tricky but my first clear memory is being stung by a bumble bee when I was around 3. I don’t recall it really hurting, just that it made me sad the bee had stung me (why?) and that it was now gonna die.

Candles, candles, candles… my kids seem to think that I do not have enough and so I seem to get them every birthday and Christmas I have like a kajillion (that is a number right?).

As for not sleeping… I don’t get up or read – if I turn on the light to read or get up I am wide awake and will never go back to sleep. I burrow into my blankie cocoon and pray I don’t end up having to pee before dozing back to sleep. ZZzzzzzzzzz

      I like that – nillionare!
I need to remember to get some candles to replenish my supply. Maybe I’ll want to create a romantic mood one day 🙂
I hate that feeling when you wake up in the middle of the night and you’re faced with that awful choice – go to the toilet and maybe wake up too much, or try to drop back off to sleep!
