Sharing My World 2015 Week 17

It’s Sunday, the day I contribute to Cee’s Share Your World, just one of the fun challenges that Cee organises on a weekly basis.

What is your most favourite smell/scent?
My two favourite smells are quite opposite to each other. One is the smell of bacon cooking. Mmm, bacon. The other is the smell of nature. Not cow poo or anything like that, but the smell of the forest, cut grass and flowers.

Do you prefer long hair or short hair for yourself?
Well, quite recently I toyed with the idea of having longer hair. I decided it would be cool. However at my age it would probably just look stupid, and when my hair gets to a certain point it tends to puff out. So short is the way to go for me. If I was going to try “going hippy” I should have done it 25 years ago.

Do you plan out things usually or do you do them more spontaneous (for example if you are visiting a big city you don’t know?)
Tricky one. I used to plan everything down to the last detail. I don’t do that any more. That’s not to say I’m a spontaneous person. There isn’t a less spontaneous person on the planet than me!

However, if I’m off somewhere I don’t know, I’ll plan the route, where I can park and if applicable I’ll book somewhere to stay. That’s the limit. I might switch the car display to “map” so I can see roughly where I am but I’ve never actually used the Sat Nav per se.

I’ve discovered that planning everything to the last detail leads to major stress. Knowing where I’m going and that I have somewhere to stay reduces stress, having exact things to do at exact times – well, life’s too short to put myself through that.

What is your favourite outdoor activity?
Walking in the woods, gardens and so on I guess. And I like taking pictures of it all. So in the spirit of that, here’s another picture of Lanhydrock, looking at the main house across the lower gardens, framed by little ornamental battlements.

Great pictures, Ali. Is Lanhydrock lived in by the family, or just open for tourists?

Thanks! It belongs to the National Trust (since 1953) but apparently the last surviving descendent of the last owners lives in a cottage on the estate. Some of the other National Trust properties still have families living in the main house. These days these old houses are very expensive to keep so quite a few have some sort of deal with the National Trust.

Beautiful photographs, as always! Mmmmmmm bacon… And I didn’t think of this until I read your article but the smell of nature is extremely powerful, it’s like a time machine that can take you to a spring long past.

I get quite different memories from a forest on a damp day and woods in the middle of summer. I don’t get any memories from the smell of bacon, I just get hungry 🙂

Beautiful photo! It almost looks like the color was taken out of everything except the garden.

You know you not suffering from a mental disorder when you can plan parts of your vacation, but leave the rest for spontaneous decisions. That’s pretty much what we do. Plan how to get there and where to stay and let the rest fall into place. I try to know what’s in the area so I get to the most important stuff and usually, I loaf a lot and do nothing. It turns out, doing nothing is a valid choice on vacation.

Over-planning leads to stress and arguments. But so does getting lost on the way and then having to sleep in the car. So I think we have the best solution.

I like to spontaneously go some place I’ve never been and explore either by foot or on a bike. Recently, I’ve learned, never leave home without my camera. Never know what I might miss as in great owl shots and no camera.

Definitely always take the camera. I always have my phone in my pocket just in case but it doesn’t take nearly such good pictures.

The puffy hair parts made me laugh. I have that issue, to. I still keep trying, now and then, for the sleek and long look but…that puffy-ness always wins..
I adore the smell of a forest and gardens and new mowed grass…great phtographs 🙂

Puffy hair can be a real pain, can’t it? Even when it’s not very long I have to get it cut to de-puff it 🙂
I’m glad you liked my photos!
