Sharing My World 2015 Week 19

Here’s my contribution to Cee’s Share Your World for this week.

Would you prefer a one floor house or multiple levels?
My house has a ground floor and an upstairs which is fine by me. I’m a little worried that one day I won’t be able to handle the stairs. Maybe at that point I’ll be able to get a little bungalow instead. Alternatively, my stairs are wide enough for a stair lift…

If you have a TV, would you prefer the TV in the living room or another room?
It’s in the living room. My old TV is currently in the bedroom but it’s not plugged in, it’s “in storage”, basically. My living room has all the equipment – the set-top box, surround sound system and so on. I’m not a “stay in bed and watch TV” sort of person.

When you leave a room, do you turn the lights off behind you or keep the lights on throughout your house most of the time? Explain your answer.
I turn all the lights off. Sometimes when I enter a dark room briefly I don’t bother turning them on if I can see what I’m doing. People who switch lights on randomly and then leave them on wind me up (unless they have young/infirm people in the house and which case it can be safer to leave them on).

Not only is electricity expensive, but I can’t help thinking of all the world’s resources we’re using up. Almost all my light bulbs are “energy-saving”, mind (around 5 Watts), though that’s pretty common everywhere since you can’t buy the old-style 100-150-200W bulbs any more.

What’s your favourite room in your home?
My living room. As per its name, it’s where I do all my living. Reading, watching TV, blogging, eating…

For the first couple of months after I moved in I even slept in the living room (because I couldn’t be bothered to put the bed together) πŸ™‚

Thank you. I’m downright pushy about turning lights off. I know people really like bright houses (I don’t actually like electric lights all that much … and I will never understand people who automatically turn on lights when the sun is pouring in through the windows), but if we stop stressing our resources, maybe our besieged planet will survive a little bit longer. Just a thought.

It’s bad at work. Some people put the lights on regardless of how bright it is. It’s like an automatic reaction to being indoors or something. I prefer to avoid artificial lights whenever possible.

My house basically has all energy saving light bulbs too. Thanks for sharing.

My answers would have been quite similar except for the last Q on house usage: I spend my time equally in the kitchen, the living room, my studio and the bedroom.

I’ve actually spent a good part of the last 20 years living in those modern-style open plan living room/kitchen flats. It is nice to have separate rooms again! Especially when cooking something smelly or using the washing machine.

We tried a bungalow once, Ali, but I prefer to go upstairs to bed. I also like having stairs in the house for some reason. I also agree with what you say about TV’s in bedrooms. I prefer to read in bed. As for leaving lights on everywhere, that’s a definite no-no in our house, too. Thanks for the interesting post.

Going upstairs to bed is nice. It separates things out a bit. I always read in bed before going to sleep.

It’s odd, my living room rarely has any activity, when at one time it was the hub of activity.. Funny how our lives change depending on where we are at the time.

I like your attitude towards a living room. When I was a kid, our living room wasn’t really a living room, it had to be kept neat and clean, in case any visitors showed up. The family would gather in that room around the TV in the evenings, but that was about it. When I left home, I never had a ‘living room’ like that any more. All my rooms are ‘living rooms’ and visitors can take it or leave it. My relatives would be scandalized, but they don’t visit me, nor I, them. πŸ™‚

I’ve heard of people who do that, where everyone congregates in the kitchen/dining room and the “living room” is immaculate, used for guests when the best china comes out. I’d feel like I was paying my mortgage for a room I never used…

With that large screen, those video games must seem even more real. I’m always turning off lights and checking water faucets. I also try to cut down on the use of the air conditioning. I’ve found out it makes me ache because of my arthritis, so it’s stayed off most of the hot weather. We keep the ceiling fans running on high. The electric bill shoots upward when the air conditioning’s been on. We have water-holding tanks on the roof of our Society (apartment building) so any faucet left running can make the tanks enpty faster and is frowned on by the other people in the Society.

It was amazing how much better everything suddenly looked when I got the bigger screen!
I’ve never had air con, though you don’t really need it in the UK.
I like “the Society” – it sounds like some sort of mysterious organisation. If you leave your taps on they “disappear” you. One day you’re there, the next there’s someone else living in your flat 😦
