The Mayor and the town manager waved as their next victim approached.

But Agent Simon Wilkins had come prepared. He’d seen what had happened to the others who’d received an invitation. They wandered around town with dead eyes, occasionally clutching their heads screaming, “No more, please, no more!” before slipping once more into a listless half-dead state.

Simon adjusted his body armour. At the small of his back was a handgun. He had antidotes to every mind and mood-altering chemical known. He’d get to the bottom of this.

“Come in, dear boy, come in!” said the mayor jovially. Simon followed the mayor into his study where the town manager was waiting.

“Please, sit down,” said the mayor. Simon steeled himself, ready for action as the manager dimmed the lights.

As night fell, Simon lurched out of the house. Tears trickled from dead eyes as he joined the other townspeople in living death. Not even his Special Forces training had prepared him for five hours of the mayor’s holiday snap slide-show, with running commentary.

Switch off the brain and make ready to nod and say “mmm, that’s nice” occasionally is the best defence.

My dentist used to do the same…pictures from whatever trip scrolled by on the ceiling tiles. Not only did my gums hurt so did my brain

Wow, as if visiting the dentist wasn’t bad enough. Probably good anaesthetic, though! Just immerse yourself in the horror and you probably forget you’re having a tooth ripped out.

Oh, I know that feeling so well. How DO you answer “Wouldn’t you like to see the slides of my vacation to … ?” You can’t say no, that’s rude. If you say yes, you’ll have to actually watch the slide show. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

I always dread it. But people are always so keen to show you, you can’t just tell them to get stuffed 🙂

I think I worked with that mayor before… the one who would bring in a 10 inch high stack of pictures from his most recent trip and come up to unsuspecting people in the break room and…. gasp… your life as you knew it was over.

Ambushed in the break room – a common tactic.
I think managers bribe staff members to do this to keep employees out on the floor and away from constant breaks 🙂
