5 Day Challenge – Odd Jobs
Odd Jobs. No, not this guy.
This is Day Four of the Five Day Challenge, which Gill over at In Touch with Emma nominated me for. The rules are:
“Post a photo each day for five consecutive days and attach a story to the photo. It can be fiction or non-fiction, a poem or a short paragraph (and each day nominate another blogger for the challenge – I’m not doing that bit).”
I have two photos for you today.
Ever since I moved in, the grill in my cooker has been a bit iffy and finally it broke. Then a couple of weeks ago the oven broke as well, leaving only the hob functional. But you can’t cook a pizza on the hob :-(. So here is my new cooker. I’ve helpfully labelled the different sections.
(a) – Chilli heating section
(b) – Cheese grilling apparatus
(c) – Pizza cooking compartment
I also needed to fix one of the steps leading to my house. So armed with some quick-drying mortar and tools borrowed for here and there, I gave it a go. My first ever attempt at such a job! It’s not very neat, but my main aim was to make sure it was solid so I smeared the mortar everywhere.
Job done :-).
Mr. Handyman! And can write poems…. Look out ladies!
But what on earth kind of cooking apparatus is that? We don’t have ANYTHING like that in the States… At least here in the country, we don’t?

99% of all cookers here are like that – hob on top, then the grill or oven/grill (mine’s a combined oven/grill), then the oven.
Some have the hob separate, but that only works if you have a proper fitted kitchen with cut-out section to put it in. You can also buy separate ovens but again, they’re for fitted kitchens.
I’m assuming then that cookers in the US are all in separate pieces?

That’s what we call the bit on top that you put saucepans on 🙂 You can also buy them separately. What’s it called in the US?

The place you put the pans to cook,, Where you place the pan is called a burner. The upper portion is called the stove top. The entire thing… Called a range. I did not know that you had to learn a new vocabulary to speak English…. Sorta cool!

I know everything on a car has a different word (bonnet/hood, boot/trunk, windscreen/windshield), but not cookers (we call them cookers!). We have the word “range” but they’re huge and cost thousands. We also use “burner” but only for gas cookers.

Are all British stoves divided like that? Our broiler/grill section is part of the oven (usually). And doesn’t work all that well, I might add. I think I want one.

Pretty much all of them (see my reply to Roger). Some cookers have a completely separate grill, mine is a combined second oven/grill. That’s not particularly what I wanted/needed but most cookers I looked at are like that nowadays and I suppose it might be handy for keeping stuff warm. It cost a fortune (£450 – thanks, MasterCard!) but it’s a Zanussi which is a good make, and with any luck it’ll last a few years so that’s okay.
I’m hoping the step lasts! It seems pretty solid at the moment.

They should sell dedicated “man” cookers with diagrams on the front, like “pizza goes here” and stuff 🙂

My husband’s grandparents down South used to have an old stove (minus the ceramic smooth-top) with just such broiler/grill sections. Glad you folks still have that choice over there: must make some delicious pizzas!

Almost all cookers are like that over here. Until reading the comments on here I had assumed this was the case the world over!
I only looked at ceramic hob cookers – I think the old-style metal rings or those hard plates don’t look as good and are definitely harder to keep clean. This one just wipes off 🙂

I love your new stove (oven, range, cooking apparatus). I would love one like that with a separate broiler compartment (kind of like a mini oven).
And look at you go your step is all good to go now!

The step looks fine. That stove looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. You even have a glass-top cooking surface. You seem to be going ultra modern, Ali.

Ceramic hobs are pretty common – I only searched for those as they’re easy to wipe down 🙂 It’s a good make so hopefully it will last a while. It does look pretty sci-fi!

OMG!!! poetry, Mr fixit AND he can cook!
We aussies are sooo imaginative that we call your hob a (wait for it) stove top.
We have gas stove top and electric stove top. Oh the sophistication!

From the comments it looks like Americans call it a stove top too. I thought you guys called your cookers “barbecues” heh heh 🙂
That’s interesting because usually UK and Australian words and spellings are the same.
