Friday Fictioneers – Bad Things Come in Threes…?
Here is my rather rushed story for this week’s Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle and with a photo supplied this week by C. E Ayr. Click on the blue froggy for this week’s other stories!
I hate to publish and run, but I’m off to my book club. It’s my turn to bring the biscuits!
“What’s that picture, Grandpa?”
“Whales, in the sea. That’s to remind us of the days before the particle accelerator accident, when 90% of our seawater drained through to another dimension.”
“Oh. Is that what caused the ruined buildings?”
“No. That was the creatures from the other dimension attacking us because we almost drowned them all.”
“Oh. So why do we still have seas?”
“That was some helpful aliens who delivered water and accidentally drowned 95% of the survivors. But they say bad things come in threes, so we’re safe now.”
“Yay!”
“I’m sure the massive comet currently hurtling towards us will miss.”
“Um. Yay?”
Love it, love it, love it! Rushed or not, it’s brilliant! Thanks for writing it.

I’m glad you liked it! After putting off even trying to think up a story on Wednesday I suddenly remembered I was out last night and was therefore short on time 🙂

You’re really into this apocalyptic thing, aren’t you? I can resonate with that, because I am, as well. I try not to be too gloomy about it, and am glad of your light tone. 🙂

A lot of my stories do feature rather apocalyptic events. I’m a big fan of end-of the world/disaster films and video games 🙂
Grandpa does seem to be taking all this in his stride!

If they reopen the gateway to that other dimension at just the right time, it’s a cinch the comet will miss us!

I bet the other-dimension aliens will be thrilled!

They’ll never see it coming! Serves them right, too…

My favorite saying is: If it’s not one thing, it’s three! I’m going to forget about the comet for now… 😉

Yeah, I’m sure this whole comet thing is just scaremongering 🙂

This back and forth scenario of unfortunate incidents is very clever. Kudos ~ hope everyone loved the biscuits.

This is so brilliant, I’m laughing my head off here. I can hardly think of another popular reason for an apocalypse… you nearly covered it all. And it’s all the fault of that evil particle accelerator, maybe it can swallow that comet.

If they time it right, the other-dimension aliens are in for another unwelcome surprise!
I’n glad you liked my tale of ever-increasing calamity 🙂

Poor Earth. We wanted to meet aliens and they attacked us. That’s waht we get for trying to be friendly. I never did think it was a good idea to let them know we’re here. Look what happened with the Borg. Bad news. Funny stuff, Ali. 😀 — Suzanne

I guess they did have just cause to attack, considering we accidentally sent billions of tons of water their way 🙂
I do sometimes worry that our space probes will lead the Borg straight to our front door 😦

That saying is true; bad things do come in threes. Look at the number of times you hear about someone famous dying (singer, actor etc) and shortly after, there’ll be a second and third — usually within 7-10 days. I think grandpa and grandchild should start worrying 😀

I think grandpa is past worrying now. He’s an optimist!

Comet, schmomet. I’m not even worried about the nuclear waste in the drinking water.
Excellent take on the prompt. Hope you saved me a biscuit.

What’s a little comet (or radiation) between friends? Glad you liked it!
Jaffa Cake, choc chip cookie or chocolate digestive? Your choice 🙂

Oops! No, the not comet, too. But they’ve managed to duck them all so far, so I think their chances for survival are good. Great, creative story, Ali!

Dear Ali,
I’ve been meaning to ask if you could bring biscuits to Friday Fictioneers next week. Terrific story.

PS There’s comet…Duck!

Dear Rochelle,
No problem. There will be choc chip. Everyone likes choc chip!
I’m glad you liked my story! Ducking sounds about as effective as “duck and cover” in case of nuclear blast 🙂

He’s handled worse. Comet shmomet. Pah. Duck and cover!

Still 5% waiting to be burned by the comet I guess.

Maybe it’ll only take out 4% which will leave 1% waiting for the next unfortunate accident.

You could turn this into a TV series, in which case you’d need more than three disasters, so come on comet. Great story – fun dialogue.
