Brrr – It’s Cold!
It’s only just Autumn, and look at the temperature when I stopped for petrol at 0710 this morning. Even the frost warning light came on! Yeeks :-(. (Google tells me that’s 39F.)

We’re almost into the second month of spring here in Oz. Three days ago it was 28 C (82F) and yesterday was 10 C (50F). Today reached 19 and overnight it’s expected to be 7 (44F). I’ve decided not to put my winter woolies away just yet.

All of those temperatures are what we call “Summer” here in Cornwall :-). Except 28C, it never gets that hot.

A frost warning light!?!?!? Do they think people can’t see there may be a little frost on their windows and they might just want to scrape that off before heading out onto the road?
And Ford makes its international customers read their odometers in miles!?!? That just isn’t right!

I guess it’s more use if you’re driving long distance and it’s getting colder and colder… the temperature was actually very variable this morning. At home it was 8C, at the petrol station 4 miles away it was 4C! The light turns red at 0C (32F).
Well, all the distances are in miles so at least it’s consistent! I’m guessing in Europe (that’s what we call parts of Europe which aren’t us) it’s in km 🙂

I’ll be darned, I didn’t know that! I assumed the distances would be in km in the UK.
I’d imagine those thermometers in cars are about as reliably accurate as those on the bank clocks… which is to say, they probably aren’t. Of course, my 20th century vehicle doesn’t have one at all… if I want to know what the temperature is, I have to roll down the window (with a crank!) 😉

We’ve been metric for ages in everything except road distances and speeds (though as you may be able to see in the photo, km/h is also on the speedometer). I guess that’s not an easy thing to change across the country, and would cost an absolute fortune re-doing all the road signs twice – once to have miles and km for the switchover and then to have just km.
Imagine all the people trying to get out of speeding tickets by claiming they thought the “100” was mph 🙂
Regarding your car, my dad has a similar feeling about the weather feed on phones – just open a window! I’m surprised you need a crank for your window – I thought you would just rap it and it would fall down into the door 😉

There are times I think the window will just come down on its own. Then I can be like all of the classy folks in my town and just duct tape some clear plastic over it…
We have the “bilingual” speedometers over here as well… not sure if it’s a feature the manufacturers put in all cars not knowing where they will end up, or it’s still a remnant from the late 70’s when the government tried to force us to go metric (As if we were gonna have any of that nonsense!). I’ve heard there are still some road signs in the US erected during that era that still have distances in km on them!

Since we’re mainly an island, the only time it gets weird here is if you cross the Northern Ireland (UK) / Southern Ireland (i.e. Eire) border and it switches between miles and km. I guess you have the same issue with crossing into Canada?

I would imagine that’s the case… though I’ve never been to Canada. I did see Canadian land from across the narrow part of Lake Huron when I went to Detroit… that’s the closest I’ve ever come to being out of the country.

Yes, this morning was a cold one. Here it was 3.2C at 7.30. – but just look what a brilliant day it turned out to be! (Well, it turned out really warm and sunny here, but I don’t know about Cornwall.) Hope your day has been lovely.

And for me! In September at least, it took me a bit by surprise. I would have expected this from December onwards. October and November are usually overcast, and the clouds at night keep the “heat” in, but last night was clear. September can be a funny month!

It was 91 degree today in Casper, Wyoming. I suppose it is the last hot summer weather before it gets cold. 😦

Google says 91F is nearly 33 degrees! I think I’ve experienced that sort of heat once or twice in my life but not for many years. Do you get extremes, like very hot to very cold there?

Yes, we have extremely hot days in summer–over 90 degrees– and cold winter weather with gusty wind. I don’t know about you but I prefer summer than winter.

I prefer summer but mainly because there’s no risk of having to drive in snow/ice. Apart from that, I quite like frosty mornings and cosy nights with the fire on 🙂

Yes, warm for us, in Monterey county, inland about 20 miles. It’s been extra warm for two weeks, 75-100 degrees. I don’t like hot, I want cold snow everyday. I can get warm, can’t cool down quickly.
Why a frost warning light, don’t people there know what frost looks like? SMH

I looked up Monterey and it seems to be in California. I’m guessing it doesn’t get too cold there but it gets very hot? I don’t think I’d do well in that climate, I’m only comfortable in quite a narrow range of temperatures. 75F sounds okay but 100F is way too hot for me.
I think the frost warning light is really an early warning – at 0C it turns red and you need to start looking out for black ice.

Just a bog-standard car dashboard. This one’s a Ford Fiesta ST – I Googled the American version and it’s identical (except on the other side of the car, of course!).

Wow! I googled and you are right. It looks very space-age from your camera angle. I had a Fiesta… way back in the day. It did not look like space-age?

I had a 1985 Fiesta back when I was a student. It certainly didn’t look like that :-).

Nope… A Great car… until the wind blew. Myine was so light, the wind would allow it to change lanes if you going to fast!
