FFftPP – The List

I know, it’s technically Friday Fictioneers day, but I’ve written a late entry for Roger’s Flash Fiction for the Purposeful Practitioner.

The supplied opening sentence is in bold, and the picture was sourced here.

There it was. You could see the corner of the folded yellowed parchment sticking out of the torn lining of the battered book.

“How did it get in there?” asked Sarah.

“I don’t know,” replied Mother, “but we need it. We can’t leave without The List.” She gave a tentative tug at the corner of The List. It didn’t move.

“Care, mother!” snapped Sarah. Ashamed at her tone, she continued in a softer voice. “The Book is ancient. We dare not damage it!”

“But The List,” replied Mother. “The List is essential. Without it we cannot continue. All will be lost.”

“One moment.” Sarah rummaged through her pack, finding a pair of tweezers. Carefully, she tugged at the corner of The List until, inch by inch, it came free.

“There!” she said. “At last we have The List, and The Book is undamaged.” She handed it to Mother who unfolded it carefully, almost reverently.

“Is everything there, Mother?” asked Sarah anxiously. “Did you remember the eggs?”

“Yes!” said Mother triumphantly. “Let’s go shopping!”

The List … from The Book. Are we on the list? Or in the book?

OH MY GOODNESS. I have this very book. It is one of my absolute favorites. In fact I love it so much I’m going to get my copy restored (the spine broke when I dropped it in a move.) Wow.

Where would we be without them? Back home with no eggs, that’s where 🙂

LOL! The whole time I thought the “list” was something very important. Fooled me at the end! Well done!

That was the idea – to make it sound like some sort of Lara Croft adventurer type thing until the end 🙂 I’m glad you liked it!

Ali, do you know of a challenge on WP where they give you 3 lines and you are suppose to use those lines in a story?

Not that I can think of. Sonya from Only 100 Words does a challenge with a photo prompt where you only write three lines but that’s not quite the same.

They may start off being inserted into ancient tomes, but shopping lists always seem to end up abandoned on our counters at work once the customers are done using them. They serve as a source of humor for me as I can laugh at such listed items as “suger,” “ceral,” and “flower”…

Maybe the shopper is buying something nice for their spouse. But not too nice considering it’s just the one flower.
