Sharing My World 2016 Week 10

Here is my post for Cee’s Share Your World. We’ve reached double week numbers already! A fifth of the way through the year nearly.

share-your-world2

What would you ask for if a genie granted you three wishes?

  • A long and healthy life
  • Tons of cash
  • Babes

What experiences are most meaningful to you?
That’s tricky. I don’t really have “experiences” any more. I just shuffle through life. I enjoy sunny days out in “the nature” and family Christmases and whatnot.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a train driver! Every year as a kid we took the train to North Scotland to see my Gran and it seemed like it would be very exciting to drive the train. My brother and I sometimes made a “train” out of the furniture, and we had a Hornby model train set too.

I guess in reality it would quite boring, though.

Complete this sentence:  The best day of my life was…
I guess it was the day of my PhD viva. After the questioning I went across the corridor to the high pressure physics lab and wandered around waiting to be called. It was great to go back in and see them all stand, hold out their hands and say “Congratulations, Dr Phillips” :-). Word spread quickly – by the time we’d finished up and I’d gone back down to the office I shared with some other postgrads and postdocs, someone had already taped a piece of paper with “Dr” on over the “Mr”!

Very cool. One of those gratifying moments, I’m sure. Hope you have a few pictures, too.

Last night I dreamed I had to get my doctoral dissertation in by morning and it wasn’t ready, I couldn’t find my notes. Someone was supposed to deliver some material I needed for illustrations and they were late. I finally woke up wondering if I will ever stop dreaming about college.

There are probably pictures around of the graduation and so on, but unfortunately this was before widespread digital photography and way before cameras on phones.
      I still get dreams/nightmares about school/university!

I’m off to York station tomorrow but think I may have just missed the Flying Scotsman, I bet driving that train isn’t boring. So you’re a Dr? I take it a professorship is a step up from that? Pleased to hear I’m not the only one who seems to be shuffling through life at the mo!

Yeah, driving steam trains would have been fun!
A professorship in the UK is an academic position, usually two up from lecturer though I guess different universities do it in different way.
Lots of us just shuffle along, I think 🙂

Well doctor I’m sure you know you must be careful how you wish for what you wish.

Yes, I can think of a million ways those wishes could go horribly wrong 🙂

Way to be blunt and not philosophical with that genie, Doctor! Here’s what I want… go fetch!

Funny, but my oldest kidlet has been talking a lot lately with her dad and I about genies granting wishes. She thought she’d had it figured out by wishing to live forever, but then started talking about immortality with her dad. I think that left her wanting no wishes from a genie. I’ve been thinking about them, too, and how they almost never give you what you’re bargaining for (a la the Greco-Roman, Midas touch’ story, which many, many cultures have variations of). I like your answers, tho. Babes! Ha! You know, the genie could have a sense of humor and give you other things named babe: the pig from the movies, I think it was supposedly the name of Paul Bunyan’s blue ox, maybe Babe Ruth (who’s probably not looking too good these days, having been dead and buried for at least half a century, if I recall correctly; same goes for “Babe” Didricksen Zaharias, whose name I’m sure I’ve butchered the spelling of). These SYW posts are always fun. Congratulations (very late) on the PhD. I remember my master’s defense, and that was nerve-wracking enough. Can’t imagine going through everything involved with a doctorate. Go, Doctor Phillips . . . you should be pulling in the actual babes rather than the genie-manufactured ones, shouldn’t you?! 😉 Best wishes, in any case.

Funnily enough, thinking about immortality, I wrote a cautionary tale along those lines years ago – https://dralimanonlife.com/2013/06/30/until-the-end-of-time/.
Yes, “babes” would get me into a world of hurt, genie-wise! I would have to word it a little more carefully…
Thanks for the belated congrats – yes, a PhD physicist now turned IT person is exactly what the women are looking for 😉

If a genie granted me three wishes, I’d go along with your first two – but I’d give the babes a miss. (Perhaps I’d pick Chris Hemsworth in his role of Thor in the film.) I can imagine your elation after finishing your viva and being told you were now ‘Dr. It’s a great tile to have and I’m sure your mum and dad were – and still are – very proud of you. We felt very proud when Nicola, our elest daughter, got her PhD.
Lots of luck in finding your ‘babes’. 🙂
