Sharing Your World 2016 Week 16

Here is my post for Cee’s Share Your World.

If you had to have your vision corrected would you rather: glasses or contacts?  Or what do you use if you need to have your vision corrected?
I’ve been wearing glasses since I was a little ‘un. I started off with the chunky free NHS glasses.

Me and Roland

I’m on the right (1985), taken in Germany.
Photo copyright BBC I would assume.

Later I had some money and got better glasses, and later still I decided to try contact lenses. They were annoying, scratchy and a big hassle. And I kept falling asleep in lectures. They stuck to my eyeballs :-(. You do NOT want to fall asleep with contacts in.

I’m back to glasses now after a run-in with conjunctivitis in the 90s. And recently I got my first pair of varifocals. Because I’m old and so are my eyes.

If you had to describe your day as a traffic sign, what would it be?
Maybe, road works/under construction.

RoadWorks

When I was little I used to think this was a bloke with an infeasibly large shovel, rather than a chap with a regular shovel stuck in a mound of dirt.

Was school easy or difficult for you? How so?
Well, I hated it. Whoever said “school days are the best days of your life” was a dirty rotten liar. I was quite good academically and it had its moments, but by and large I wouldn’t go through school again for anything.

Now university… that was a different kettle of fish entirely! Now, those really are the best days of your life 🙂

Would you rather take a 1 or 2 week vacation with an organized tour or take a cruise of your choice?
That’s a tricky one. On the one hand, the idea of having a holiday where everything is organised and I don’t have to worry about anything sounds quite appealing. On the other, I’ve never been on a cruise and it sounds quite fun. My parents go on cruises now they’re retired and thoroughly enjoy themselves, and cruises are pretty well organised too, so I think I’ll take the cruise, please!

You’re right, that’s very similar to my glasses history. Except, I never slept during lectures… 😉 And I hear you on the worst and best times.

I once fell asleep during someone’s title slide (it was full of equations – booorrring) and woke up to find my PhD supervisor glaring at me 🙂

I started wearing glasses at the age of 8, because I could not see the blackboard.

I was around that age – some time in primary (= “elementary”?) school. “Ah, so that is the blackboard of which you speak…”

I love the photos! I think I was in kindergarten, about 6 years old, when I got my glasses. 🙂 Urgh! I’ve gotten used to wearing them over the years, and sometimes alternate into contacts when I’m doing sport or yardwork or something active. Yeah, I don’t have great memories of primary school either (we moved thrice), but there are some good ones mixed in, fortunately. College I enjoyed and felt I ‘blossomed’ intellectually, but socially it was not much fun as I was not into football (American football), heavy drinking, and losing control of myself.

It’s strange to go to contacts after so long wearing glasses. It was weird feeling the wind on my eyeballs!
University in the UK is not nearly as “sport-centred” as it seems to be on US TV. There’s a lot of drinking, though (which of course is legal at 18 here) 🙂

Yah, from what I’ve heard, you have to get the soft contact lenses. I can wear mine overnight, but I’m not supposed to. Right now, I’ve got the month supply disposables, not an extended-wear type thing. You might want to try soft lenses. They are soo much better these days. I started (some would say very early) in contacts, because I hated glasses so much back then and was teased a lot. I think I was 11 (maybe 12), and even since then, soft lenses have improved so much in comfort. Even the toric lenses are comfortable (to me); these are for astigmatism (just in case you haven’t heard of that). Anyway, have a great week, Dr. A.P.! (Hey, you’re an app. Dr. App!)

Yeah, back in “the day” with my astigmatism I had to have semi-hard gas permeable, which were quite painful. I know technology has moved on since then but… Plus now I’ve got varifocals, and again I know you can get varifocal contacts but I’m not sure I trust them. And no-one’s coming near my eye with a laser, I’ve beamed myself in the eyes with enough lasers over the years, thanks 🙂

I do understand. I probably have to move into varifocals now, too. My contacts are not working quite so well as they used to, and I have to place reading material farther away from my face, not close-up. I have a REALLY ‘steep’ astigmatism in my left eye, so laser surgery, I don’t think, is even an option for me anymore. Not sure if I’d want to do it either, and it’s still pretty costly over here. Well, much luck to you and your eyes! 🙂

It’s when I realised my book was getting further and further from my face that I realised it was time to take action 🙂
One of my eyes is -7 with major astigmatism so I don’t know that laser treatment would work for me either.

I moved 250 miles from home, so it was all new and exciting. The first chance to do my own thing, make my own decisions, get the full experience. I expect if I had lived at home it would have been just like going to school, only harder and more expensive.

Yes, I know. My first year at university I lived on campus, so it was a sort of stepping stone to living completely on my own. Independence but with the university watching out for me.

I loved school…and then I went to high school. It positively hated me–except for English composition class. I’m glad I didn’t wear glasses as a kid. Those NHS glasses were the pits. Dawn is right, you were definitely cute when you were little 🙂

I’m with you from A to zed. Academically, school was a piece of cake (not counting the things I still don’t “get”). I wear glasses. I will always wear glasses.

And college? University was a gas. Kids who refuse to go because they think it’s just like high school, but worse, are really missing out. Because college is where you discover everything.

I’ve heard cruises are great. My daughter is an actor and entertained a couple months on a Scandinavian cruise ship. She enjoyed it. Of course, passengers are only onboard for a week I think. Most of the cruises have gone well. You’ll have to give up on your smart phone I think as you’ll be out of range of the signal. A couple of cruises have gone bad with boat problems. I’ve never used contacts either. One time my daughter wondered why everything was bleary and found she’d put both her contacts and glasses on. 😀 — Suzanne

The guy on the sign looks like he’s trying to lift up a very heavy umbrella! Our “Men at Work” signs in the US have a simplified version of that same silhouette… though it should really just show a guy leaning on a shovel and taking a perpetual lunch break…

I agree with you about contact lenses! I didn’t need glasses until quite late in life, but I hated (and still hate) wearing the things. I’d give anything to feel comfortable with contact lenses, but can’t get on with them at all. As for holidays, it’s nice to try different types. We’ve done tours but more often we ‘go it alone’. We’ve still to try a cruise. People either seem to love them or hate them.

I’ve been wearing glasses for thirty-odd years, so they’re pretty much a part of me now.
My parents go on a cruise every year and love it. They generally fly somewhere and then join either a proper ship or sometimes a boat which goes up and down rivers like the Danube. They use Saga/Titan Tours, who pick them up from home in a people carrier and everything is organised, door to door!

Loved your road sign… We do not have that one in the states. In the states, this sign would signify ‘moving a lot of crap’…. We probably should have that sign for workplace meetings?
