FF – Back to Basics

Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Al Forbes.

I’m really busy at the moment and thought of re-posting the story I wrote for this picture last year in the hopes that nobody would notice 🙂 but I decided to bung something together after all.

“Ah, look at those. I remember motoring down the road, wind in my hair…”

“Darling, stop it! You had an Austin Morris! Vintage car, indeed.”

“Wow, Dad. Cars have changed so much! When I grow up I’m gonna invent a flying car!”

“Hundreds have promised the same, son…”

Trevor looked wistfully at his “Amazing Flying Car”, rusting in the field. No way to power it since the Fuel Wars of the mid-twenty-first century. No fuel, no electricity. No civilisation, some would say.

Shaking his head, he nudged Daisy and headed to market. “Giddy-up, girl!”

Life was so much simpler now.

How to come full circle! For someone who just “bunged something together”, you did a great job, Ali!

Thanks! It was literally a ten minute job (plus a few minutes editing when I got home). I stupidly read the last story I wrote for that photo first and got stuck on that all day.

I’ve written before about society switching to an agrarian base in order to restore the biosphere. More than likely though, it will be forced on us in the end just as you’ve predicted.

It’s a nice idea but I think you’re right, it will be forced on us.

I would love to go back to those days, even though I’ve never ridden a horse in my life. The idea of it is great.

I love the idea of it too, but would probably miss my creature comforts after a while.

Well at least a few beasts of burden survived. Ali, I don’t like your scary future stories but I suspect you aren’t too far off the mark.

They’ll need the horses in the days to come. Hopefully it will remain fictional, though!

Full circle indeed. I love vintage cars. They are so classy. In the 50’s we had a 1927 Overland Whippet flatbed.

A step back in time – which would be a good thing if the reasons weren’t so scary. Nicely done.

That would be just our luck, wouldn’t — we finally get the amazing flying cars, and the Fuel Wars hit. Too realistic, now that I think about it! Great futuristic vibe, Ali.

Ha! Indeed it IS much simpler now. My dad told me when he was a kid, the local banker had a 1934 Chrysler Air Flow. Only 1000 of them made. When Dad was in his 60’s, he got one! It was really COOL. You show that old stuff to kids today and they think it’s awesome, like the typewriter or a vinyl disc record.

    Fun stuff, Ali!

I always thought that flying cars are everywhere. Some people ignore speed limit and over speed up. If they make flying car, that might reduce accident like collision, etc.

On the other hand, people might be flying around everywhere willy-nilly constantly having near misses and collisions 😦
