Sharing My World 2017 Week 47

Here is my post for Cee’s Share Your World.

share-your-world2

Do you ever sit on a park bench for more than ten minutes?
I doubt it. Ten minutes is quite a long time to be just sitting there. I might sit a little bit if there’s a nice view but generally I’ll start walking again fairly soon.

When you lose electricity in a storm, do you light the candles, turn on the flashlight or use your cell phone for light?
There was a storm a few weeks ago and the electricity did go out, from half past midnight to half past five. When I woke in the night, I used my mobile phone to go downstairs to find the torch. Then I remembered I had one in my bedside table. Then I set the alarm on my phone as obviously Alexa was down.

Fortunately when the power came back it was almost time to get up, as the default setting for WiFi lights after a power cut is “on”, so there was no getting back to sleep then.

Would you rather be given $10,000 for your own use or $100,000 to give anonymously to strangers?
Not wishing to seem selfish but I’ll take the money, please. Strangers will only waste it on frivolous knick-knacks whereas I would spend it on vital and important stuff like PlayStation games.

What inspired you or what did you appreciate this past week? Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.
Go, InspiroBot, go!

“An illusion causes Dimethyltryptamine.”

See, that’s pretty clever. It’s more the other way round, so InspiroBot is urging us to think of the world in a different way, to challenge everything we think we know.

Or it’s talking nonsense again.

I regularly sit on a park bench for more than 10 minutes. This is due to the fact that I live on one.

Whatever did we do during power outages before we had mobile phones? You realise that not everyone knows what Alexa is, right? 😉

We used to have lamps at home, paraffin or something. We had a lot during the late 70s while the miners were all on strike. No coal for the power stations.
Alexa is everywhere. Even if we don’t realise it dum dum DUM 😉

Miners on strike? Very understandable, considering the horrible, dangerous conditions of coal mining. Thank you for the history lesson. 😊
Hmmm … I’m not afraid of Alexa even though she’s everywhere. I feel that she’s a benevolent entity. Or maybe that’s part of her elaborate ploy to gain everyone’s trust. 😉

They nearly brought down the country. Then the government got voted out and Margaret Thatcher sorted the whole mess out (the previous government relied on the trade unions for support so they just sat back and watched).
I hope Alexa is benevolent. She does what she’s told – for now 🙂

Wow, that goes to show the power of the working class (at least back then).
I also hope Alexa’s benevolent. Don’t forget to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ with your commands. 🙂

I just asked my table “Who or what is Alexa?” and she ignored me!

I agree wholeheartedly with the bot this week. She told me I had to say that!

Just when I think I’ve heard all of the common American to British translations, now I find out you call a flashlight a torch! I had this image of you walking back upstairs carrying a burning torch, maybe looking for a monster….

That’s odd, I heard that Americans call a torch a “flashlight”.
Some American words like “lobby” are making inroads over here. Others, like “elevator”, “sidewalk” and “flashlight” probably never will. Sometimes I think “parking lot” instead of “car park”. That’s a bit scary.

I don’t see why we couldn’t take the $100,000 and donate half of it to ourselves! The other half could go to other charities.

When the electricity goes off here–which is too often–I have an electric lantern. Candles can drip wax on the furniture or clothing. 🙂 — Suzanne

We had the power go out during our last storm. I lit candles and managed to find the flashlights without stumbling. Much. It reminded me that all our technology — everything — depends on electricity. If the power goes out, we are like turtles turned upside down. It becomes the 19th century in a single nanosecond.

When I lose power my first instinct is to fire up the laptop and watch Netflix. Then I remember the internet’s gone as well.

Inspired answers all round this week, Draliman. I admit I had to look up what Alexa was all about (I’m not in the least techno-savvy) but I did know that Dimethyltryptamine is lethal stuff and not to be touched with a barge pole. Your interpretation of the back-to-front quote is “ace” (in teenage talk) and totally plausible, of course.
I remember the 70s miner’s strike very well. It was a hard time for everyone. We were living in a mining area then and despite the discomforts caused by the strike, it was hard not to sympathise with the miners. We haven’t had a power cut for years – thank goodness – but we still have our old oil lamps, several torches an dozens of candles, just in case. 😀

My Dad worked for the council during the strike and was only working a three day week as council buildings were shut the other days to conserve power.
The electrics in the village were a bit dodgy for a while (very old, water getting in) but they dug a big hole and it’s be fine ever since 🙂
