… my little Godson’s fourth birthday today. He’s having a party with his friends around lunch time and then a birthday tea later on 🙂
What is your favourite comfort snack food?
Chocolate, I guess.
What was one of your first moneymaking jobs (other than babysitting or newspaper delivery)?
My first job was working in the computer department at the County Council. It was full-time, for about three months. This was between my A Levels and going to university, so it was a nice little money boost before going away.
What inspired you or what did you appreciate this past week? Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.
I popped over to my parents’ house after work one evening to help move furniture back (they’ve had a new carpet put down) and Mum cooked me bacon, egg and potato waffles for my tea. That was much appreciated 🙂

I would imagine the words “birthday” and “tea” have never been spoken or written consecutively by anyone before in the US. I could be wrong, but I’ve certainly never heard the phrase used before!

We prefer it to the more cumbersome “anniversary of birth early evening light meal”.
It would be used when not in conjunction with the birthday party (which in this case was in the morning).

My impression: your “tea” is our North American “lunch”. My question: what time is “tea” served over there? In any case, I hope you have a great party for the little guy.

This is a tricky one, especially “dinner”. In my part of the country it’s traditionally “breakfast, dinner/lunch, tea”. “Tea time” would be around 5/6pm. In some places it’s “breakfast, lunch, dinner”. However, you always take someone on a date (in the evening) out to “dinner”, not “tea”. If it’s at midday, you take them out to “lunch”, not “dinner” even if you call the midday meal “dinner”. “Tea” is more likely a light meal at home. If it’s not a date and you’re going out with friends/family in the evening, you go out for “a meal”, not “dinner” and definitely not “tea”. Though sometimes people will go out for “dinner with friends/family”. But I would never say that. It sounds too posh.

Can I introduce you to a wonderful Canadian word that dispels a lot of confusion. It’s “supper.” 😉
Hereabouts, unless you’re going to an elegant restaurant that serves “dinner” in the evening, you go out for supper.
We sometimes get into trouble with dinner as in lunch and have to make it clear, lunch at noon/dinner at noon. But “supper” is clear as a bell. 🙂

Ah, now “supper” is another kettle of fish. To me, “supper” is an evening snack (after “tea/dinner”). To some, “supper” is “tea/dinner” 🙂

At the last minute I added the word “potato” to “waffle” as I think to Americans “waffles” are generally something different 🙂
