FF – What a Stroke of Luck!

Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Priorhouse.

My story this week relies on a quite horrible play on words. Sorry, but it cracked me up 🙂

“All delivered, Conference Room B.”

“What? B? Our targets are in A!”

“Who’s in B then?”

“The Annual Conference of the Nuns of St Fortune. You delivered nerve toxin coffees to nuns!”

“Do you go to hell for accidentally massacring nuns?”

“I don’t wanna go to hell! We’d better go look.”

In Conference Room B…

“Eh? They’re all fine! What does it say on the packet?”

“Um… Lethal, no antidote, see overleaf for immunity information.”

“So what’s the immunity information?”

“I already checked, there isn’t any. ‘Persons Immune: Nun’. Wow, I thought that was a typo.”

“What a stroke of luck!”

Perhaps slightly irreverent, but hilarious. I hope the reason they were dosing the coffee with nerve gas will be your next flash fiction tale?

There was supposed to be some short explanation on their actual targets but I ran out of words 😦

Next time you’re in Salisbury head to the Cathedral. Although it’s Anglican they do have sisters who can grant absolution!

Very funny and great dialogue of bemused assassins. A lovely play on words, and good to know the nuns are safe. What happens to the targets now, or assassins that fail?!

I imagine the assassins are in big trouble, I think they used up all their poison. I’m glad you liked it!

    Dear Ali,

Perhaps these would be assassins will now change their bad habits. Now they see that nun is better than some, eh? Loved it. And I made sure my coffee was firmly in place on the table before reading. 😉

Ha, bad “habits” 🙂 They are pretty inept, maybe it’s time to try something else…

You’re right, that is a groanworthy play on words but it made me laugh 🙂 This also reminded me of one of my favourite words: ‘unnun’ which means to defrock a nun. Very handy for scrabble.

Having gone to a Catholic school from Grade 1-12, I can tell you there were a few nuns I would have liked to poison, so this nerve toxin would have been highly unsatisfying. Thanks for the grin.

I used to live in Ireland where Catholic schools are very common. Most people who mentioned it had some horror stories to tell…

Great play on words and I reckon a lot of weird events get traced back to incompetent assassins.

Some day, we should go through your short stories and pull out stories of your two guys and the crazy things they do, add a plot and character development, and put them in a book. Think they would cooperate?
