Sharing My World 28-10-2018

Here is my post for Melanie’s Share Your World.

Name two books that have influenced you and share how.
The first book has to be “Off to Play”, by ground-breaking author Mabel O’Donnell. It’s  basically a minimalist treatise on the surface simplicity of life in 1950/60s England, but the dark undertones quickly become obvious. Here’s an extract from the beginning of the book:

“This is Janet. This is John. This is Mother. This is Father. See Janet, Mother. See Janet play. This is Father. See John and Father.”

See how it’s already polarised along gender-specific lines? I mean, blimey. Deep or what?

The second book is “Geometric Multiplication of Vectors: An Introduction to Geometric Algebra in Physics (Compact Textbooks in Mathematics)” by Miroslav Josipovic. I don’t understand any of the words but it has lots of cool pictures of shapes and stuff.

In your opinion, where is the line between art and not art?
That line is in an individual’s head. Everyone likes something different. For example, take one of the most famous works of art in the world, the Mona Lisa. But why? Countless people go to see it every year and stare at it in awe. They see it as art, I see it as some old painting. I don’t get the “brilliance” of it.

Trivia for Halloween: What item is banned only during Halloween from 12am October 31st to 12pm November 1st in Hollywood California? (I know the answer, but I do not have any idea WHY)… c’mon… hazard a guess!
What could it be? What could it be?

Film cameras. Car chases. Stunt doubles. Socks. Kitchen utensils. Small dogs in handbags. Okay, I’ll look it up.

It’s aerosol string (usually sold as brand “Silly String”). After a reported US$200,000 clean-up operation one Halloween, the stuff got itself banned 🙂

What is something that really annoys you but doesn’t bother most people?
Teaspoons thrown carelessly onto the draining board at work. The people – animals – responsible will be hunted down like dogs, dragged in chains back to the kitchen and forced to clean, dry and put them away properly like what they’re supposed to.

I can tell with my extrasensory perception that the spoons carelessly thrown really got under your skin didn’t they Ali. All the best with clearing up that problem. 🙂 — Suzanne

Janet & John? Hmmmm, we got Dick & Jane over here, which always led kids to giggle and come up with rather raunchy suggestions for what Dick and Jane were doing…

I’m sure just as Janet loves John, Jane loves Dick… um…

The nerve of those people tossing their tea spoons like that! They should be forced to read
“Geometric Multiplication of Vectors: An Introduction to Geometric Algebra in Physics” and be covered in silly string 😀

Oh how I miss Janet and John. I miss Janet. I miss John. Where have Janet and John gone?
I used to take Brillo pads in to work to clean all the cutlery that was disgustingly filthy.
    I do not miss work!

Fortunately our cutlery doesn’t have time to get filthy as it tends to “disappear”…
I think it was the Spitting Image book from many many years ago which did a Janet and John spoof (on top of the famous Terry Wogan ones). It went something like (usual introduction, including Spot the dog), then… John has a shotgun. Run, Spot, run! (BLAM) Run, Janet, run!

I wonder why they renamed the characters from the original USA versions, Dick and Jane? Perhaps Fun with Dick and Jane was a little too risqué!

Someone else commented that Dick and Jane caused sniggering. Also, Janet and John were actually based on the US series “Alice and Jerry” (by the same author), so I don’t know whose bright idea “Dick and Jane” was 🙂

Are you the one who’s going to hunt the “animals” down and drag them back to the kitchen in chains? We want video footage as proof. 😀

Thanks for Sharing Your World. I like ‘old masters’ vis a vis art, so Mona is one of my ‘likes’, but I also do NOT get Jackson Pollock….and he’s supposed to be on the same kind of level as Mona. It’s all in perception! I used to wonder about those who didn’t clean up after themselves when in the shared kitchen at work. Finally one of the people who usually cleaned up after EVERYONE, put up a sign “This isn’t your home, you don’t have a maid, so do your own housework and don’t be a slob!” I don’t know that it really had any effect, but I thought the effort was good.. 🙂

I prefer abstracty explosions of colour 🙂
Where I work an email/note has an effect for around a week and then people “forget” again 😦

You might be able to fool the rest of them, but you can’t fool me. You understood every word of “Geometric Multiplication of Vectors: An Introduction to Geometric Algebra in Physics (Compact Textbooks in Mathematics)” And I’ll bet you read it more than once.

Then your’re in good company. I hear Einstein failed math. Logically that means you must be a genius like him. ;0) I’m not so lucky, I passed math.

I can’t even imagine how many cans of Silly String were used for a cleanup that cost that much! That stuff is a pain, though. First time the boy had it, he accidentally silly stringed the ceiling.
