FF – Inner Voice

Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Dale Rogerson.

Warning: there are a couple of slightly rude words in my story for comic effect.

Copyright Dale Rogerson

“Great, isn’t it?”

“Beautiful.” No.

“We’ll be the talk of the neighbourhood!”

“We certainly will be.” … a laughing stock.

“Just wait till everyone comes round later!”

“It’ll be simply marvellous!” I feel a headache coming on.

“So, are you happy?”

“Deliriously, my love.” Shoot me now.

“What do you think, Benny?”

“It’s crap, Dad. Why can’t we have a proper Christmas tree instead of bits of sticky tape… shit, did I say that out loud? I meant, it’s amazing, father!”

“Thank you, Benny. A little more practice on your inner voice, please.”

“Of course, Father.” Piss off.

“Much better.”

This tree reminds me of my Dad – the grandkids are always confused and disappointed with his minimal Christmas decorations!

Ha, mine are also minimal but mainly because by the time I’ve gone up to the attic to get the tree and decorations I can’t be bothered to spend any more time on it!

LOVE this. I was thinking about writing about a Christmas tree but didn’t and am so glad. You did a smashing job of it. L-o-n-g ago when I was in college and came home for Christmas, my parents “presented” a tissue paper tree ~ blue and green tissue paper poked into wire, purchased from a friend. I should have applauded their artsie strangeness but didn’t.

I’m glad you liked it! The moment I saw the shape of the tape I got fixated on a Christmas tree and ended up having to shoe-horn a story around it 🙂

It’s probably a good thing that Father isn’t a mind reader. Cleverly done.
