Sharing My World 20-01-2020

Here is my post for Melanie’s Share Your World.

Where do you get your news?
While I’m making my packed lunch for work I get Alexa to play the BBC headlines. Then at lunchtime while I’m eating my lunch at work I read the BBC news website. Sometimes for a laugh I read one of the commercial news websites as well.

What ‘old person’ thing do you do?
I’m already getting on a bit so the stuff I do isn’t “old person” stuff, it’s “normal stuff” 🙂

When was the coldest you’ve ever been? The warmest?
I really can’t remember. Possibly back when I lived in Germany. Being mid-continent and away from the sea the temperature varied between -15 and 30-odd, which you don’t get in Cornwall. We get more like -2 to mid-twenties. Currently being mid-winter it’s hovering between around 4 and 9 degrees, so not too cold.

Do you eat food that’s past its expiry date if it still smells and looks fine?
Yes, of course. One of the biggest reasons for wasted food is people chucking food away the moment it hits its expiry date. Hard cheese? Doesn’t go off. Eggs? Float test (and a sniff when you crack them). One of the biggest is “eat within 3 days of opening”. What a massive lie. I’ve eaten perfectly good stuff 2 weeks after opening.

Then there’s people who mix up “best before”, “sell by” and “use by”. “Sell buy” is an instruction for the shop, and food is fine after “best before”, it’s just not necessarily at its best.

Juts know what to watch out for. Any mould anywhere on bread? Throw the loaf away, the spores will be everywhere. Soft cheese – mould permeates inside, so you can’t just cut if off. Stuff like that. You can tell by sniffing something and a tiny taste if something’s gone off, usually.

Use your common sense, people! And obviously, if you’re feeding small children, be a lot more careful – best not to take chances with the little ones!

And here I was using the neighborhood children as guinea pigs to make sure my food isn’t poisoned….

“Old person stuff?!” Of course it’s normal stuff! 😀
I have also eaten food after the expiry date. (I wonder why my hair is a strange shade of green…)

That’ll be the year old blue cheese. So hard to tell when it’s gone mouldy…

I second your rant about food waste — it’s so, well, wasteful! To be fair, the “best by” and “sell by” etc. dates really are confusing. They really could do more to be clear about such things. But come on, if it smells fine and looks fine, it’s probably fine.

Well, unless it’s a damaged can, and then you might get botulism — but that’s not an expired problem.

It occurs to me that ranting about food waste sounds a bit like an “old person” thing to do. So I will meet you on our respective lawns to join you in our ritual “shaking of the fists”.

Yeah, sounds like fun! Let’s start with “appalling behaviour in schools now they’ve banned the cane” and take it from there 🙂

Well I can’t pretend to be pro-cane, but I’ll grouse twice as loud about bad behavior in schools to make up for that. 😉

Totally agree on the instinct tests, Draliman…except when you’re like me…I only eat when the can gets open and when I don’t eat everything, I refuse to eat it again…Granny says I’m too picky, I think I only like to hear the can opening…MOL 😸Pawkisses for a sunshiny day🐾😽💞

So far, I haven’t heard anyone who throws away food as soon as it passes its official expiry date. As for cheese, it has to turn solid blue before I think it’s “off.”

I’ve known people who never eat leftovers. What a gigantic waste. Good advice, Ali. I was raised by parents who lived through the Depression. 🙂 — Suzanne

Spot on Ali! It really is ridiculous now with all the ‘sell by’ ‘best before’ ‘use by’ on groceries. I myself scoffed down a cherry yoghurt a whole week beyond the use by date (I love em & couldn’t bare to throw it out!) Tasted fine with no ill effects noted!
I do worry about some items that give nearly a year as best before though! What the hell is in these things?
So if it looks & smells fine it’ll be used!! 👍😂😘

Hi, long time no see 🙂
I view “use by” as a guide, not a rule. I’ve eaten yogurt long after use by as well and it was fine. I hate throwing away food.
And yes, stuff which looks like it should only last a week and its “use by” is 2025 is a mite worrying 🙂
