FF – Welcome Visitor

Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Douglas M. MacIlroy.

“Oh, man, I’m not sure how much longer I can stay cooped up in…”

“Shh! Look!”

“Wow, a little bird! Shh, don’t scare him.”

“He’s just going about his business. Doesn’t know about the problems of humans.”

“Let’s get a little closer!”

“Yes!”

“Able still to explore the world while we’re isolating.”

“Amazing, huh? Look at his beautiful feathers!”

“Yep. Aw, during all this and then this amazing thing happens. Takes your breath away.”

“It does. Now, carefully…”

Click. BANG! Squaaaaawk. Thud.

“We may be out of toilet paper, but we’ll eat well tonight! Roast budgie, sparrow, whatever!”

“Magic!”

Yum… sparrows are delicious… with garlic and lemon.

That’s a couple of birds that have been sacrificed for our survival this week already! We’re a selfish species for sure! 😉

It’s a Finch. I don’t know what you call them there, but here, that would be a wintertime Goldfinch. Not much eating on that little bird, I’m afraid.

I would say a chaffinch, so a bit more meat than a goldfinch!

We call them finches too. I’m not good at identifying birds, so neither is my protagonist!
No, he is a bit tiny.

Oh, dear! I hope I don’t have to resort to hunting my own food. And I have no idea how to make toilet paper either 😀

Split my sides. hahahha! I sincerely hope these guys ARE NOT my neighbors. I carefully feed my fine feathered friends. I don’t want the picked, plucked, and pressure-cooked (or grilled… which sounds tastier?) Loved it!

You shoot a bird that small, you’ll be scraping the pieces off of the ground. Mincemeat with grit, yum!

    Dear Ali,

Poor bird. I suppose it it’s a matter of dire survival…still…Air fryers are great for cooking fowl.

      Dear Rochelle,
I think they have herbs, spices and a blowtorch. I’m sure that counts as “air frying”!

My goodness, things are getting bad – out of toilet paper already and eating sparrows. I liked the black comedy around this; topical and seriously funny.

I cooked pigeon this week, Yummie. Poached it with garlic and some veggies, then added rice and turned it into a risotto. Eating it now while reading this. Eating and enjoying this story doesn’t get better than this. Well penned. 🙂
