Sharing My World 06-04-2020

Here is my post for Melanie’s Share Your World.

If we learn from our mistakes, why are we always so afraid to make them?
Because that mistake may be our last (dum dum DUM).

How do we know that pleasure is good and pain is bad?
Because when I eat ice cream I feel good, but when I smash my toe into a large immovable object I feel bad.

What problem or situation did TV / movies make you think would be common, but when you grew up you found out it wasn’t?
Whenever I see an American film or TV and there’s a pedestrian in the road, the oncoming bus or lorry honks its horn and then just crashes right over them.

In real life, instead of wasting time honking their horn I have discovered that the oncoming traffic uses their brakes instead.

If you drive, do you speed when no one is watching? Have you ever run a red light late at night on purpose, particularly if it doesn’t seem to change very quickly? If you don’t drive, what minor law may you have broken?
Someone is always watching…

Is this hypothetical? When the roads were really really quiet as the lockdown came into force I had to hypothetically go to work one more day to collect stuff I needed to work from home. I definitely never hypothetically quickly nipped over 100mph just to try it once and see what it was like.

Hypothetically, it turns out that when your Fiesta’s top speed is over 140mph, 100mph feels the same as 70mph (the actual speed limit).

Hypothetically.

[draliman’s legal team has this to say: This never happened. This blog is fiction and no laws were broken heretofore notwithstanding hereafter and in perpetuity veni vidi vici QED. And if the onboard computer says different, it’s a lying bastard.]

What positive things are you finding to do to occupy your time right now?
Well, working 10 hours a day as usual, only from home. I’m going for a daily walk in my lunch break.

I made more pizza dough.

And I’ll be eating this Easter egg later, which unexpectedly arrived by courier from the management team at work.

And in isolation, there is no one looking for you to share that lovely egg?

Were I lucky enough to have had mostly new cars during my life I might have felt compelled to see just how fast the car would go before I sold it. However, if I had moved on to Alfa Romeo’s for my last four cars I might have thought that discretion was the better part of valour when I reached 125mph! Hypothetically speaking.

I’m glad you’ve only hypothetically reached those speeds. It’s better that we can only hypothetically get massive speeding fines!

Thanks for Sharing Your World, Alistair! I snagged that ‘naughty Easter bunny flashing his egg’ from one of your other commentors and plan to hoist it on my FB page, thereby shocking prudish relatives and neighbors who might see it there. One makes one’s own fun during this isolation shtuff, doesn’t one? Of COURSE nobody took your driving mania seriously! You posted the story on the internet, which renders it subject to careful scrutiny and I happen to think that speeding during the time of Covid isn’t a crime anyway. Last comment about that theoretical law breakage….a Fiesta actually goes that fast?? The Fiestas that Americans have access too would fall apart if one tried to hit 75 or 80 in ’em. And maybe I’m just not up on Ford Fiestas. I’m a Chevy (Chrysler now) gal from long back. Have realized that the muscle cars of my youth (GTO, Camaro, Corvette, etc) are things of rosy memory and long in the past. The ‘new’ versions? Feh. Knock offs and politically correctly made ones at that. But I’m glad you could fly. Even theoretically!

Smaller Fords have been retired in America now. I believe the Fiesta ST was available up until last year, though. It’s essentially a sports car and funnily enough is in no way a muscle car (1.5l 3 cylinder engine). Quite nippy, though! A few years ago Chryslers did appear in the UK. You don’t see many, though.

I haven’t had breakfast yet and your pizza really made me hungry. The restaurants here are closed so I’m eating mostly veg dishes. I wouldn’t kill for meat but the feeling is too close for comfort. 😦 — Suzanne

Yes, meat is something not so easy to get hold of. I can get pizza-topping cut meat in the local shop but not so much proper cuts. Of course, I’ve stopped going to the supermarket for the duration.

Hypothetically, you could probably still have the book thrown at you. But you’d have to serve your prison sentence from home, so you could work and pay off your debt to society at the same time…

Your pizza always looks so good.

I used to love to go over the limit, but now I watch the speedometer like a hawk. Too worried about accidents.

Somehow everything went right with this pizza. Maybe it’s because the dough was fresh rather than defrosted.

The days of driving my car at all have gone 😦 Since the lockdown started I’ve switched it on twice to check the battery, and shuffled backwards and forwards a metre to make sure the brakes aren’t freezing on.

I’m going to try my own this week. I have a cast iron and would like to make it in that.

We’ll get some extra life out of our cars at least.

I’ve been switching mine on every couple of weeks and shifting back and forth about a metre (Fiestas are historically bad for brakes getting a bit stuck). Unless I want to drive to the supermarket (I don’t), I’m not allowed to drive any further!
