Sharing My World 28-09-2020

Here is my post for Melanie’s Share Your World.

Well, hell. I’ve been “upgraded” to the block editor. I’ve been using the classic editor since July 2011 and I’m not one with change 😦

Fortunately it’s trivial to use, very intuitive. But I still don’t like change, dammit. I had to change my green font colour to blue, because the preset green is awful and I can’t be bothered to faff with custom.

And worse – in the block editor, the image showed centralised but in the preview it was left-justified. Poor show, WordPress. I had to click three button before I found the justify controls.

Where do you feel most at home? Please be more specific than “at home, doh” please. It could be a room in your home, a person, a location…
At home, doh.

Oh no, sorry. I can’t put that. In my living room, then. It has the TV and the best Echo and the PS4 and whatnot. It’s also my home office!

Would you rather ride a bike, ride a horse, or drive a car?
A car. I’ve never ridden a horsey. I’d be too scared of falling off, and they’re living creatures with their own personalities, so who know what they might do…

And they say you never forget how to ride a bike. Lies!

What song would you sing on “Karaoke Night” (if you were forced to do so)?
“All By Myself”. I can’t sing in tune, but with that song you can turn it into a comedy, really over-dramaticising the entire thing, falling to your knees, fist in the air etc. Off-key singing would only make it funnier 🙂

University or life experience, which do you feel best prepares you for life?
Surely “life” is “life experience?

University is good preparation. It’s like a “trial” – you get many of life’s challenges, but with the safety net of various university offices behind you to help out with advice when things go awry. And go awry they will!

I don’t like the new editor either. I’ve found a way to switch to classic but it takes an extra step. Most likely they will remove it once and for all and I will be forced to use it. Ugh.

Please youtube your karaoke performance. I would love to see it. lol

I’ll have to actually do the karaoke now 🙂
Yes, now they’ve moved me to it I’m going to persevere, as you say they’re bound to get rid of the classic one.

hehehe Now I will be singing “All by Myself” all day.
Because I knew the Classic Editor’s days were numbered, I began using the block thing for a while. Much cursing and eating of chocolate ensued. I agree- I’m not sure why the preview is different from the actual. I wish bugs would be squashed, ironed out etc before presenting a major change in format.

I avoided using it earlier in case I couldn’t get back 🙂 I avoided the infamous “bee bee boop” editor using that tactic!

Okay, Ali. I’ll bite: how much to get you to do a video of your “All By Myself” karaoke with all the bells and whistles? A lifetime supply of cheese?

Many thanks Alistair for Sharing Your World, especially with the additional fuss over using that immensely irritating block editor. I agree with your bike statement, it is a lie that you ‘never forget how to ride a bike”…maybe you don’t, but I’ll testify that you do lose your flexibility and sense of balance as you age. I fell off the one time I attempted to ride a two wheeler as an adult. Never again. O_o “All By Myself” is perhaps THE perfect karoke song…because you can ham it up as you describe. LOL Thanks for taking the time to Share Your World..a world with block editor b.s. Nobody likes it, I’m not sure who WordPress is listening to that thinks it’s great, because no ‘hobby’ blogger (their description of folks who blog for pleasure rather than profit) has ever said they loved it. Well nobody I follow any way. Maybe I’m just biased. It is rather a pain in the arse.

I nearly fell off the last time I tried to ride a bike after many many years. Don’t fancy trying it again.
As for the block editor, I’ve used the classic editor for so long it’s a big change. I actually found it quite easy to use as it’s quite similar to adding pages to SharePoint Online so I’m used to a block style method.

If you go on the WordPress forum and let them know you’d like to change back to the classic mode, one of the admins will do it for you.

I couldn’t possibly do that. I’m in IT, I’m supposed to embrace change, chase the “new” etc and whatnot 🙂

Weird…yesterday I only saw the new block editor and almost cried. And today, I see options. If you log in from http://www.yoursite.wp-admin, click all posts, and then the arrow next to “Add new,” it gives you the option of block or classic editor. Wanted to mention that just in case you aren’t ready to embrace change 😀

Thanks, but I’m already embracing 🙂
It’s daunting at first glance as it looks rather “sparse”, but everything is actually there whether on demand on the right hand side or on the popover menu. I shall persevere!

When autonomous cars take over the world, a horsey ride is going to seem like the safe bet.

Without the Classic template I accidentally found while poking around, I couldn’t figure out how the hell to do anything in Block. Intuitive, my squirrel behind…

I guess I’m used to putting together pages in SharePoint Online, which uses a very similar system…
Let’s hope that autonomous cars view horses as an “obstacle” and don’t just drive through them. And I bet they won’t realise they have to overtake really really slowly and carefully…

Don’t be such a ‘egghead’ and learn the new WordPress so fast!!!!! I hate it- so I had to find a way to make it go back to the classic. “Old dogs….” DON’T always want any new trick.

I don’t like changing, unless it is necessary. For that, I find the Bloc editor not only unnecessary but quite irritating.
