Sharing My World 14-12-2020

Here is my post for Melanie’s Share Your World.

What news event do you vividly remember hearing about as a child, and where were you?
The thing about being a kid is that I wasn’t very interested in news. I was more interested in cartoons. However, one event I remember was the first ever shuttle launch. It was delayed a few times, but we were called into one of the classrooms each time (the one with the TV!) to watch until it took off. That was April 1981, so I was in my final year of junior school.

What is a Christmas song that makes you cringe?
I was struggling to think of one and then another blogger reminded me – “Last Christmas”, By Wham!. Why does it make me cringe? Because it’s an absolute pile of steaming shit, that’s why.

What is one place you shop(ped prior to Covid) that might have surprised people?
Absolutely nowhere, I would say. My shopping is limited to a very few fairly mainstream outlets, mostly online. Even more online currently.

What is your least favourite holiday side dish?
I’ll eat anything and everything, me. Bring it on πŸ™‚

Last Christmas, haha. It’s terrible, I know, but it’s still G.M. and I love the guy. Guilty as charged.

Kids today would never understand how big of a deal Space Shuttle launches used to be pre-Challenger. I was unaware they were a big hit overseas as well!

If you had to listen to horrible covers of Last Christmas all the time, you’d appreciate that the Wham version isn’t that bad!

Boy, those covers must be bad…
Yep, we little ones were terribly excited by the whole shuttle launch thing.

I kept trying to get into her music as she’s quite cute, but never quite managed it. Maybe if she kept her mouth shut…

I looked up “Cyberdog” – it doesn’t appear to be quite my thing. Where are the sweater vests? The comfortable slippers? No, not for me πŸ™‚

Thanks Alistair for Sharing Your World! “Last Christmas” gets the prize for most over played and most despised Christmas song, but I remain puzzled that “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” didn’t even get one mention. Now I happen to like both songs, (as long as I control how often they’re played), but agree with you on your choice. Mariah Carey anyone? LOL The space shuttle launch was a big deal, but then they started blowing up and all that, and for me? They lost their magic. It’s interesting how a bit of generational gap has shown up in that question and how vast the age range of my readers really is. I want to thank you for participating each week! Warm wishes whatever your celebrations entail!

The “Grandma” song is an American thing, I think. I’ve never once heard it played in this country. We don’t approve of squashing grandmothers at Christmas.
I missed the Apollo landing by a matter of months, so I couldn’t miss the shuttle too!

Surely you wouldn’t eat fruit cake? Especially, not after being re-gifted for several years… Years ago at work we did the white elephant gift exchange and someone wrapped a package of half-eaten peeps. There was some trouble over that one.

I wouldn’t eat fruit cake, full stop.
I had to Google “peeps”, as over here that’s slang for “people” and half-eaten people would indeed cause some trouble! I finally tracked it down to “marshmallows sold in the United States and Canada” πŸ™‚

Lol! Yeah, they’re little pink fingerlings of sugar-dusted (this is America here) marshmallow yuck (IMNSHO). I hadn’t considered half-eaten “friends”, although possibly more appropriate to my blog. πŸ™‚

“Last Christmas” and “It’s a Marshmallow World” are tied for the most revolting songs of the season! And on that note, here’s wishing you much holiday cheer and blessing, Ali. Have a good Christmas!
