FF – One to Doomsday

Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Brenda Cox.

It happened overnight.

There was no wind. No storm. No vandalism.

Two of the three trees simply fell down. Ripped out by the roots.

Once upon a time (as all good fairy tales begin) they called these ‘The Peace Trees’.

‘As long as the three stand, the future is assured,’ so the story goes. Or words to that effect.

Two down, one to go.

One minute to doomsday?

But the old stories are gone and no-one even suspects. Except maybe old Granny Wilkins. She has “the sight”, they say.

But no-one ever believes her.

Until it’s too late.

This would make for a great fairy tale, I think. Well done.

I’m a believer that the world won’t end with a bang but with a whimper (I know that’s a quote from somewhere, but it applies in this case.) Good story. Why doesn’t anyone ever listen to Granny?

A very intriguing magical story. The circumstances of the trees should be a testimony of Granny Wilkins prophecy. I want to know more!

They might learn to listen to Granny, but it will be too late.

No one ever listens to wise Grannies, neither in magical worlds nor in our reality. And the doomsday clock is ticking.

At least Granny Wilkins knows, just like the trees, her days are numbered. Not long now, or has she an escape plan up her sleeve?

She sounds like a wise old bird. Hopefully, Granny Smith’s apple trees won’t fall down too! Nice one Ali.

The Doomsday clock may be ticking, but what is it telling us? And how do we turn it back? Your story conveys a good sense of the helplessness we feel confronted by the problems we have to solve

I’m reminded of the biblical statement that prophets are often without honor in their own countries. We don’t want to believe the kid we grew up with, or the old lady who always had cooies to share. We need someone exotic, different. Human nature, I guess.

I guess that explains some people’s fascination with “influencers” and the like.
