FF – It’s Christmas!
Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Dale Rogerson.
It’s Christmas!
Lights, colours, buying gifts.
It’s Christmas!
Boisterous antics, late nights at the pub.
It’s Christmas!
Bringing home the tree, hanging the decorations.
It’s Christmas!
Even Baz had treated himself. An extra couple of newspapers padded his sleeping bag and he’d pulled it below the overpass to keep out of the worst of the snow. He wasn’t supposed to be under here, but he knew he’d be okay for a week, no-one would move him on until January, because…
It’s Christmas.

Deck the sleeping bag with piles of paper……..How sad that this is still a reality!

For sure, in this day and age in rich countries too.

It’s appalling how many people are homeless in wealthy countries. Instead of billions spent on 8 minutes in space, some of that money should help people on this planet.

For sure. I heard on the news this week that some kids are turning up to school tired because their parents can’t afford furniture.

I like the deliberately hollow jollity to this

Yes. This. The contradiction between what’s happening in the world and the meaning of Christmas becomes sharper every year.

We each have our own way to celebrate, even those less fortunate than most.

that’s sad. when i visited norway, the 6th richest country in the world, i was surprised to find homeless people living on the streets. i later learned it was by choice for some of them. the government does provide housing where they could stay.

Yes, I’ve known one or two people who were on the streets by choice. Most aren’t though in this country.

You have portrayed reality all too well, Alistair! I agree with Penny. Very powerful writing.

This could be the alternate ending to A Christmas Carol if Scrooge had only told the Ghost of Christmas Future where he could get off. I hope Baz…. er, Bob gave Tiny Tim one of those extra newspapers…

Such a wuss, that Scrooge, blindly going along with those ghosts.

Dear Ali,
You stepped away from your normal comedy and packed a powerful punch. Thought provoking and well done.

Oh the cruel irony of the homeless person curled up and shivering “safely” under the underpass only because law enforcement is busy having a grand time celebrating the “holy” holiday and so temporarily can’t get back to the business of night-sticking the vulnerable. I don’t just blame the police, as they are only the direct interface between a government and its governed.

Nothing is better than a bit of extra padding just because it’s Christmas. Well done. 🙂

Only good will to others when it doesn’t count. Sad… and hypocritical of society.
