FF – Building Fences

Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Brenda Cox.

I used to play wiv da kids across da street. But den deir parents tried to take our stuff an’ break our houses. So our parents built a big fence. Now I can’t play wiv dem any more. An’ dey is nasty now too. Dey grabbed my teddy bear Mr Fluffles through da fence and dey kicked him aroun’. I can’t reach him. He looks lonely. Dey won’t give him back. Poor Mr Fluffles.

I hope our parents can make up soon.

It cold tonight. Mr Fluffles doesn’t have any heating. I hope Mr Fluffles is okay.

This is so innocent in many ways, if only adults were not such fools.

I hope he is, too. I think perhaps the fairies will bring him a leaf blanket and will sprinkle some fairy dust about him, to keep him nice and warm.

Kids bully each other. I don’t think this is something brand new in our modern world. There are two kinds of kids: the bullies and the bullied. Most of the people I know were the bullied. But we grew up so now, we are only bullied by our own governments.

Maybe Mr. Fluffles is a Trojan Horse 😅😈
I hope the kids don’t grow to be like their parents and keep this cycle perpetuating 😩

      Ha, yes! He’s on a mission 🙂
I hope they don’t too. It can take generations to break the cycle 😦

He’s caught between a rock and a hard place. I hope it builds strength in him instead of breaking him. It can go either way. The dialect you used makes his story all the more poignant.

While the “parents” fight, the resolve of the people does seem to be hardening.

A hard story to read, for the sadness it conveys. The voice you chose conveys the naivety of the sentiments – but, my goodness, we need more of that naivety, more of the ability to see the good in people. The contemporary playing out of this story in Ukraine is a tragedy for all concerned, including the Russian conscripts. A fine piece of writing, Ali

Thanks! I’m glad you saw I was trying to convey the current war, sorry, “special military operation” without actually mentioning it.

I love this. A story of the hatred and violence of today told with the understanding and voice of an innocent child. It made me feel sad and that’s good. Excellent!

Thanks 🙂 I was hoping to evoke sadness. That seems a bit mean of me, now I write it “out loud” 😮

The voice of innocence describes the hatred and divisiveness of the adult world and we see how childish such behaviour really is. I hope the child can hold onto his innocence as he grows up – but somehow I doubt it. The hatred seems to be contagious.

Sometimes I think children (actual children, not adults acting like children) should be ruling the world…

    Dear Ali,

So much said through the child’s voice. It’s sad when parents teach their children how to hate. I hope he can retrieve Mr. Fluffles. Very well done.

      Dear Rochelle,
Yes, I keep hoping we’ll “evolve” away from all that, but not if parents pass it on.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt so bad for a teddy bear. Powerful imagery.
