Fool on a Bike
Daily Prompt: Trains, Planes, and Automobiles – You’re going on a cross-country trip. Airplane, train, bus, or car? (Or something else entirely — bike? Hot air balloon?)
Chad was a dreamer. A dreamer and a fool. Everyone knew it. Chad knew everyone knew it. And he didn’t care.
He’d had ideas for this, ideas for that. He thought they’d make him famous. Some great invention, or a feat of daring. Nothing ever came of any of them. In fact, his biggest claim to fame was that he failed at absolutely everything. People often wondered how that could be – out of all of his thousands of hair-brained schemes, surely he would have accidentally succeeded at least once?
This time Chad had his best idea yet. Everyone laughed at him, but there was nothing odd about that.
They said it was stupid.
They said it couldn’t be done.
They said it would kill him.
Chad was going on a road trip with a difference. He had decided to cross the Atlantic. On a push-bike. A push-bike specially designed by him. He would be famous! Magazines, talk shows, money, girls!
Launch day arrived and he cycled onto the beach in his diving suit, his small trailer of supplies towed behind him. He pulled the lever and specially designed pedal-powered tracks descended. He cycled easily across the sand and into the water. The water crept up and over his head. Next stop – the USA!
Further and further he cycled. He admired the curious fish which swam around him. Deeper and deeper he cycled. He switched on his lights and admired the exotic plants which waved gently back and forth.
An hour later a cracking sound broke the silence. Spider cracks spread across his faceplate. He recalled a conversation he’d had with one of his doubters before he’d left.
“What about the pressure?” the doubter had asked.
“It’s fine, I’ll meditate,” he’d replied.
Maybe that wasn’t the sort of pressure the guy had meant?
The cracks spread. His helmet exploded. He ground to a halt as threads of blood drifted towards the surface from the remains of his head.
They said it was stupid.
They said it couldn’t be done.
They said it would kill him.
They were right.

Hate it when “they” are right. Thank you for the good read. Strange looking fish, lol.

Hee hee! As you know as a regular reader of my blog (thank you!) I’m not the most talented of artists 🙂
Sometimes I wish that what I see in my head would actually transfer itself to the paper, but alas…

With your brain cells, someday I’ld enjoy your insight on “they.” They have been around forever and have had great power at times. Also “they” have been ridiculed other times. Just a thought.
Your fish were great, except the one wrong way swimmer.

Ha, I tried adding some extra fins but it didn’t work out!
I enjoy reading books written by such as Dan Brown which often deal with “the they” but I know nothing of the reality (or otherwise) of such secret organisations – which is exactly the way “they” want it 😉

Ah ok, I didn’t mean that they but they that are closer to our lives, the social circles lor extented famly members that we allow to judge us. Probably best left alone.
I enjoy Dan Brown while driving, audio books.

Aha, got you. The very up close and personal “they” we want to please but don’t always manage to… and their sometimes harsh judgements that can hurt so much.

I really enjoyed reading this, smiled all the way. Tweeted it. You wrote it a long time ago, but it’s a story that will last forever, who would think of writing something like this. Thanks
