FF – Metaphor For Life

Here is my story for Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle. This week’s photo was contributed by Ted Strutz.

The car nestled against a tree, headlights smashed, bonnet standing agape, paint peeling, bodywork rusted. Abandoned. Forgotten.

Randall allowed himself a wry smile. A fitting metaphor for my life, he thought. Once hurtling carefree along roads of fortune, city job, gold-digger trophy wife… then cast out to rot and die.

He sat next to the shell, cursing his old alcohol-soaked bones. A curious deer wandered close, bolting as it sensed his eyes on it.

This isn’t so bad, I guess. Nature. Even “dearest” Sophia is here. Say hello to the car, Sophia.

Sophia’s skull grinned at him.

Randall grinned back.

That grin is a dead giveaway.

It was quite relaxing even writing about the deer, I wish I’d had more words to do more nature stuff.

The tides of fortune often change. Maybe Sophia knows something Randall would much rather be allowed to forget

Ooh, dark, Ali. Did he dig her up or kill and dismember her? He’s got more to worry about than alcoholism. He’s crazy as a loon. O_o — Suzanne

It’s open to interpretation, though it’s my feeling that he snapped and killed her 😦

If the car is a metaphor for Randall’s life, then the deer should have froze when it sensed his eyes on it. Right, Sophia?

I’m sure she tried to bolt… too slow, Sophia!

    Dear Ali,

Your humor went dark this week. As Iain said, the literal trophy wife. Well done.

    Shalom,

Yes, not much to laugh about in this week’s offering. I’m glad you liked it!

Entertaining from the beginning to the end! The trophy wife got the worst end. I suppose he needed some company?

Sophie was Randall’s wife, I believe. Not gold digging anymore. Did she die of car crash?
