Sharing My World 22-05-2023
Here is my post for Share Your World, hosted by Di.
Growing up, were you closer to your mother or father, or was it a balance of both depending on the circumstances?
A balance of both. Mum did the day-to-day sort of stuff (getting us ready for school etc), Dad played with us on Saturday mornings and so on.
What was your favourite toy as a child, and do you still have it?
Hmm, I did love my bike. I also loved my first ever computer, but that wasn’t so much of a toy.
Did you have any secrets?
Not at all, I was a completely open book! Apart from all the secrets…
What did you want to be when you grew up, and are you anywhere close?
I variously wanted to be a train driver or a football player (that’s actual football, not American football, which no-one had even heard of in those days). I’m not even remotely close to either of those. Though to be fair, there was no such thing as “IT” in those days.

Don’t worry about the secrets. Just continue the payments and Mum’s the word!

Surely there had to be someone back in the day whose job was to keep those big, 50 ton computers from crashing. Or maybe I am thinking of the train driver…

Trains, 1980s computers, all about the same size…

I became a hot ticket (for about 20 years) in a profession that hadn’t been invented when I was growing up and has by now become obsolete. What a short lifespan for a profession!

I miss proper documentation and user guides that aren’t just pictures (I assume you’re talking about your technical writing).

Yes. You have NO idea how much I miss real documentation. I was really REALLY good at it. Just about the time everyone decided “no one needs documentation,” I was at my peak. But they were willing to spend an infinite amount of money on software development and nothing for a writer. And we were a LOT cheaper than any developer. But that’s the way the world turned.

Thanks for playing along. I always wanted a train set, but never wanted to be a train driver. However, I did fancy having a go on the skid pan with a double decker bus or driving a tank!

I don’t fancy a skid pan but I’d love to drive a tank if I was allowed to drive over a bunch of cars š

In Tesco’s car park………….. Love it! I’ve had a ride on a tank, but they wouldn’t let me drive it.

It’s not so easy to cycle around here any more with all the traffic, and Cornwall is all hills š¦
