Sharing My World 21-08-2023
Here is my post for Share Your World, hosted by Di.
Have you ever been fishing?
Yes, quite a lot as a kid. I never caught anything, though. It was really more about being by the river.
Do you prefer to watch football, rugby, tennis or hockey on TV?
I guess out of all of those, tennis. Though Wimbledon is the only one I really watch, I like the grass and the whole atmosphere, with the crowd being so supportive of all the players.
Have you ever ice skated?
No. I’d quite like to try but not in front of loads of other people and I’m a bit worried I’d fall and break something. Same with skiing.
Did you enjoy sports at school?
My goodness, no, not in any way, shape or form. However, I was “fortunate” enough to have a condition with the bones in my feet while I was still growing so I got out of most of it. The only sport I enjoyed was rounders, which I always assumed came from baseball but it appears it was the other way around, with “Base-ball” referenced right back in 1744 and played back then in the south of England.

I knew it! Baseball is more than just America’s pastime…

It would be cool to see what it looked like in the 1700’s.

The only school sport I did well was archery. For team sports I was always one of the last to be chosen.

I’m pretty sure they’d never have let anyone in my school near a bow and arrow π

Hello. The Wimbledon finals a few weeks ago was a fantastic match.

Yes, there was some good tennis this year.

The rounders-baseball thing has been told to me both ways by various “experts.” Personally, I’m guessing the games both emerged from an unnamed but similar game and neither preceded the other.
For totally confusing, I think I vote for cricket, a game I do not understand at ALL.

Watching cricket can be quite relaxing! Sometimes nothing much happens for ages.

People used to say that about baseball, but they have made new rules to move the game along. I kind of like the leisurely pace, but TV didn’t like games that lasted longer than the audience.

Cricket test matches (the long ones) remain the same, but they also now play much shorter one day games which move along quite quickly as the batters don’t have the luxury of hanging around waiting for the perfect ball to hit.

Yup. That’s pretty much what they did to baseball. Limiting the time the batter has to sidle up to the place. Limiting that number of “conferences” between manager and whoever he’s conferencing. If they linger too long at anything, they get an error and there are actual penalties. I think they’ll loosen up after a while, but the games were getting really REALLY long. Those are great games for baseball aficionados like Garry because they are inevitably pitching duels — NO one is getting a hit because the pitchers are really good. Audiences, though, generally like to see something happen.
