Weekly Photo Challenge: Nostalgic

Simpler Times

I don’t remember these photos being taken as such, I was too young (I’m the one on the left in both photos). The other chap is my little brother. I remember the setting on the right – outside our old house in Carnon Downs, Cornwall, where I spent the first 5 years of my life. These were taken in the early 1970s.

me and my brother

The little wooden fort below was made for us by our Dad – in the 70s you didn’t just nip out to the shops for new toys. Your dad would disappear into the garage or shed and emerge a couple of days later with a cool new fort! The drawbridge even went up and down (counterbalanced by a cotton reel my mum had finished with). We got years of use out of this fort. Again, I’m on the left, my brother is on the right.

Don’t I look smart in the photo on the right, ready to start “big” school aged 12?

Fort and school

I was also born in the seventies! Good times πŸ™‚

I actually just snuck into the sixties but I don’t recall the 2 months of it I was around!
Good times indeed – ah, the summer of 76. We won’t soon see the likes of that sunshine again.

lololololol, drinking out of the hosepipe, building dens, singing into my hairbrush to Fleetwood Mac, handmade cardigans and my mam had a great old fashioned top washer with wooden tongs and a mangle on top. I miss them days! I think you,ve hit nostalgia on the head here πŸ™‚

We used to cycle around the neighbourhood with our snorkel jackets on (worn only by the hood!), back in the days when 5 ten year olds didn’t constitute a “gang” πŸ™‚

I had a GRIFTER bike πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ society is certainly becoming a bit ‘sucky’ i’m not fussed on it

Cute pictures/ And that fort is wonderful!
What I notice, you are always on the left here. You think there is a reason or subconscious?

    • July 6, 2013 at 10:08 am

I noticed that, it’s weird! I went through other pictures before choosing these and I’m always on the left in those too!

Oh my goodness Drali these are so endearing!! The fort is awesome! I remember as kid, taking all the couch cushions and sheets we could find, to build a not-so-secret wobbly castle in the living room. Ah.. the good days! πŸ™‚

We did the same with the couches and cushions! The good old days indeed. Now it’s all work, bills, more bills…

Ahh but you were on your brothers right hand side, which to me says he was always reaching for your hand.
    Very handsome young men.

That sounds nice – we were pretty close as little ‘uns. It was my job to look after little brother!

Oh my god, those pictures are just so precious and so cute!!!!! Yup those were the days when you had to build your own fort, dollhouse, dollhouse furniture, scooters with ball bearings for wheels that sparked and screeched everywhere you went, and way more fun that they way people do things nowadays. Although as a parent, I am too lazy to build anything – other than a cool box car I made for my little guy out of the box where his car seat came in – which he loved to pieces.

Come to think of it, I should do that more often…

    • July 7, 2013 at 5:33 am

      I miss those days.
Glad your little guy liked his box car – I did hear that young kids often enjoy playing with the boxes more than the contents!

Weird, huh? I think maybe it’s like a baby’s eye colour changing in the first few weeks (or whatever it is).
