Bitter Boat
It’s time for Friday Fictioneers, and this time I’m well stumped. My muse has gone on holiday, I think. Never mind, I’m not missing one so I’ve popped together the story below.
Thanks as always to our host Rochelle, and to Ted Strutz for supplying the photo. Other entries for this week can be found here.

Ah, to be a cruise ship! The majestic lines. A power station turning huge propellers to slice with ease through the dark waters of the Atlantic, the Pacific, to distant and exotic destinations. The pride of the fleet!
It could have been me.
It SHOULD have been me!
Ding ding, all aboard for the harbour tour! All aboard!
Harbour tours. Pah! How could the Great Builder (may He be exhalted) install my consciousness in this tiny, flat-bottomed scow? How has it come to this?
I think today I will end this. Sink myself. All hands lost.
Goodbye, cruel world.

For not having your muse, this was a rather unique take on the prompt. I liked it!

Thanks! I have, however, noticed a tendency to personify when I’m stuck for ideas – statues, mannequins, shopping trolleys – now boats! Ah well, if it works… ๐

Haha, I hadn’t thought of that! I do see a trend. Ah well, I tend to turn to magic whenever my muse runs dry. I’m sure every author has their own thing. Guess we found ours.

Boy, for someone who lost their muse you not only wrote a fantastical piece full of imagination and pathos, but amusing also. Well done.

Thank you! I think I just got annoyed when I couldn’t think of a story quickly. The impending completion on my first ever house purchase is destroying my mental health :-(. Or maybe I’m just upset when I can’t think of something dark and haunting ๐
I’m glad you enjoyed it!

All a bit drastic isn’t it, isn’t there room for advancement, maybe serve his apprenticeship then move on the ocean liner?

Heh, maybe he’d consider that if he wasn’t feeling so sorry for himself!

Yes I guess so…..I couldn’t help feeling sorry for him…

Dear Draliman,
At least he didn’t have his consciousness installed in the Good Ship Lollipop. I loved your story. Unique, imaginative and clever.

Dear Rochelle,
Yes – I don’t think he’d have liked that at all.

Ha, I did think when I’d finished it that it definitely once again had tones of Marvin about it!

The muse got back in time for cast off I see. Nice look at the heart of the ship.

It’s a shame to learn that ships have dark thoughts too. Hopefully it won’t carry through on its threat.

Great idea – anthropomorphisation (phew!) always works for me.

Anthropomorphisation and personification are my regular go-to guys. Mannequins, shopping trolleys, statues, sharks, I’ve done it all here on FF!

so that’s how boats are when they’re depressed. ๐ not good for the passengers. even w/ your muse on holiday, it’s still a very imaginative take ๐

Unique take! Sometimes you don’t need that silly muse, huh? Well done. I understand though because I felt the same way this week, despite the very cool prompt.

I just read your story and it’s great!
When I can’t think of a cool story I fall back on personification/anthropomorphisation – my backup guys ๐
