CWG Week 7 Episode 5
It’s week 7 of Kerrie’s Chain Writing Game, and this week we see Hugh escaping from an “inescapable” prison (and the noose)! Will he get out? Where will he go?
Catch up with the story by clicking on the little blue froggy. My first contribution is below.
Hugh knew how lucky he’d been, getting assigned to this cell. According to the plans he’d found, there were only three cells in the prison which backed onto the old sewerage system, this being one.
It had taken him months to work the mortar from between the concrete blocks, using careful modifications to his prison-issue toothbrush. Though his teeth were now rotting, he was out of his cell!
He lingered a moment, hearing Kurt and Jack panicking in his cell and smiled. Maybe they’d get fired. Scum.
Hugh crawled down the cramped tunnel, taking the turnings he’d memorised from the plans.
Lets hope no one flushes the toilet. He’s a brave man.

I am glad you started the story of his escape as I didn’t know how to do it. I kept rehashing the Shawshank Redemption. Great continuation/flashback.

I had to go for “old faithful”, the sewerage system. Short of teleportation I didn’t see how else to get him out!

Thought so. I was thinking of an escape route and I immediately thought of the sewage system. It’s always the sewage system. The worst way to escape, but still worth it.

Damp, smelly and predictable. Had to get him out somehow, though, so there almost had to be a tunnel of some sort given his sudden disappearance.

Yup, and the sewage system fits that parameter of a quick escape. It’s awful, but you can survive it. Still, this is only the beginning. He’s going to have State Troopers and FBI hunting him wherever he goes.

Hopefully he knows every episode of “The Fugitive” off by heart – might give him some ideas on evasion.

Yup. He’ll have to figure this stuff out fast.

I need to read this in its entirety and in order. Each time I check in, it’s a different character undergoing a crisis which, having missed the intervening pieces, comes as a complete surprise to me. I do hope someone will publish this amazing journey in a single downloadable file! I am not a good segmental reader, it would appear. Oh, and segmantal isn’t a real word. But it oughtta be. Oughtta isn’t a word either.

There are a lot of words I use which Chrome reckons aren’t really words. I ignore it.
On Kerrie’s site, at the very end of each game. she publishes a link to dropbox where you can download both the epub and pdf versions of the whole story! If you can’t find them, let me know and I’ll email them to you. This is the 6th chain story (each story runs roughly Sat-Wed).

Good addition. He’s so close and they don’t even know it.

I thought that would be cool, to have him only inches away and they have no idea.

Yea I thought so too.
