No Happy Endings

Here is my contribution for Barbara Beacham’s Mondays Finish the Story.

We get a photo and a starting sentence and then 150 words on top. It appears to be fairy tale time this week, so that’s what I’ve written! Thanks to my rather odd sense of humour, my story makes me laugh. Ha ha.

Once upon a time in a land far, far away there lived a pixie called Mike. Pixie Mike.

All the other pixies made fun of him. They all had cool pixie names while Pixie Mike was stuck with “Mike”. Floats With Flowers, Runs With Unicorns and Sleeps With Fairies never stopped taunting him.

Pixie Mike was very upset.

One day a great evil came to Pixie Land and all the other pixies ran to hide. Pixie Mike saw his chance to save Pixie Land! The other pixies would never make fun of him again. All he had to do was cross the Chasm of Terror and retrieve the Orb of Light.

He stepped tentatively onto the bridge and inched across. “I’m going to make it!” he thought.

But halfway across he slipped, fell into the chasm and broke both his legs. Because real life’s not a fairy tale. Bad things happen.

And nobody lived happily ever after. Especially not Pixie Mike, who finally got his pixie name. Stumbles and Splatters.

Or he could have learned to play bass and joined The Pixies instead.

(I’m fighting allergies, just pretend that was a witty comment, OK?)

    • April 6, 2015 at 5:18 pm

I looked them up! Maybe drummer would be better since he broke his legs 🙂
I hope the allergy fight goes okay. Allergies suck 😦

Oh.. why did he fall down? but stumbles and splatters is another funny name!

    • April 6, 2015 at 5:23 pm

He’s just clumsy I think. So his new pixie name will suit him!

Ouch! Oh shit, that was funny.

I’m glad you share my sense of humour 🙂

        I’m rather morbid. 🙂

Oh! You’re such a spoil sport! LOL! It was terrible! But I laughed. :D:D

Funny. I liked the sarcastic wit of your story!

  8. April 6, 2015 at 11:27 pm

Congratulations , Mike. Your nickname is well-deserved. Maybe, just well-earned? Be careful what you wish for!

And there I was thinking this was going to be another fairy tale, and then smack! I really enjoyed this story.

    • April 7, 2015 at 10:22 am

It started badly for Pixie Mike and only got worse 😦
      Glad you liked it!

OUCH! I was rooting for Mike.

  11. April 7, 2015 at 2:35 am

If Pixie Mike only broke both of his legs, then I say the Chasm of Terror isn’t deep enough!

    • April 7, 2015 at 10:22 am

I did have a whole list of injuries but I was slightly over the word count as it was 😦

      • April 7, 2015 at 1:02 pm

Stupid word counts… always keeping the good stuff out of flash fiction stories!

        • April 7, 2015 at 1:21 pm

Yeah, imagine the gore I could’ve introduced with just 20 or 30 more words…

  12. April 7, 2015 at 4:06 am

Great story. Good example of …sometimes you are better off with what you already have. Things can always get worse….or, better.

    • April 7, 2015 at 10:23 am

He definitely should have just run off with all the other pixies.

  13. April 7, 2015 at 9:49 am

    Poor Pixie Mike!

    • April 7, 2015 at 10:24 am

He’s not having much luck, is he?

  14. April 7, 2015 at 11:22 am

Poor Stumbles and Splatters.. hope that wasn’t all his blood from his snapped-off legs that turned the chasm of Terror red? Great evil won then I take it? Another awesome contribution – loved it 🙂

    • April 7, 2015 at 1:21 pm

I have an awful feeling that is where all the red came from 🙂
I did feel bad about great evil winning, but I didn’t have enough words left for anyone to do anything about it.
      I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Terrific story Ali ~ It makes a change to all the unrealistic happy endings ~ You win some you lose some ~ I guess this is why fairies grew wings 🙂

    • April 7, 2015 at 2:25 pm

      I’m glad you liked it!
I thought a more realistic ending was in order, and I don’t like to write obvious endings anyway. Sadly, pixies are rather lacking in the wing department 😦

A very twisted fairy tale! Poor Pixie Mike – or should I be calling him Stumbles and Splatters now? Great story. 🙂

    • April 7, 2015 at 7:02 pm

He earned his Pixie name, you have to use it now 🙂
I’m happy you enjoyed my story!

    No sugar for lemonade.
Folks need to learn to work together.

Thanks for stopping by my piece on the prompt.

    • April 7, 2015 at 7:10 pm

Yeah, all the pixies together might have stood a chance. Thanks for reading!

Very funny…hilarious…poor pixie mike..but I like his name..please tell him this.

  20. April 9, 2015 at 12:11 am

This made me laugh, well done, sometimes what we wish for can be worse than what we have.

    • April 9, 2015 at 6:54 am

That’s often the case, I’ve found. “Pixie Mike” wasn’t really so bad, now, was it…?

  21. April 9, 2015 at 9:00 pm

Ali, I should have expected something like that, but I didn’t. Silly me. Those pixies are a disappointment. I thought they were magic or something. I guess some of them are nasty. At least Mike was a nice guy…er pixie. 😀 — Suzanne

    • April 10, 2015 at 6:27 am

Maybe they ran out of pixie dust. That’s the only explanation!
Pixie Mike’s a lot nicer than a lot of the other pixies. There are bullies in every culture.

  22. April 9, 2015 at 9:15 pm

What a funny story, but I was kinda sad =)) Nicely done!

    • April 10, 2015 at 6:28 am

No happy ending for Pixie Mike or Pixie Land 😦
      I’m glad you liked it!

  23. April 11, 2015 at 7:40 am

I read your story when it first came out, I couldn’t comment. I still don’t know why.
I adore your gore, your writing style and subject matter. I don’t care about his legs, kinda’ funny.
Wonder what it is about this story or writing that bothers me?
    Just sharing.

    • April 11, 2015 at 8:42 am

Maybe its because pixies are supposed to have fairy tale endings.
There were originally going to be more injuries but I ran out of words.

  24. April 11, 2015 at 2:34 pm

Life’s not easy for a Pixie named Sue. Or whatever.
