Sharing My World 16-12-2019
Here is my post for Melanie’s Share Your World.
Do you enjoy receiving Christmas cards through snail mail?
Yes, it’s nice to get stuff like that through the post. I don’t get much stuff through the post any more since so much stuff is online. At least that means no bills through the post anyway!
Do you like the taste and/or smell of peppermint?
To a certain extent. Not if it’s too strong.
What is your least favourite holiday side dish?
We only have “side dishes” at restaurants and I don’t eat out at Christmas. If we’re talking “my least favourite thing to put on my plate”, then carrots. I’m not keen on carrots.
What is the coolest (best) gift you ever gave someone?
I can’t think of anything. I’m not great with gifts.
Bonus question because I thought it was nifty: What is a Christmas song that makes you cringe?
l’m with Dawn on this one – “Last Christmas” by “Wham!”. It’s overplayed and annoying. And it’s not really a Christmas song either. It’s about unrequited love and just happens to mention Christmas. It could as easily have been set at Easter.

Lol. But it’s George Michael after all, so we’ll forgive him this terrible song.

If you think the Wham! version is annoying, try a cover version by almost anyone. They’re all played at Mecca, and they’re all crap. Oddly enough, I don’t mind the original…. but they never play it anymore!
And the holiday powers that be will never realize “Last Christmas” isn’t a Christmas song the same way the Amurrica powers that be will not realize that “Born in the USA” isn’t a patriotic song…

One of the UK’s favourite Christmas songs is actually a protest song featuring a guy who’s upset he can’t be home for Christmas because he’s stuck in a trench in the first world war getting shot at (“Stop the Cavalry”). But hey, it mentions the word “Christmas”…

Thanks Alistair for Sharing Your Merry World!! I think you’re in the majority — low key and simple with the ‘celebration’ is the way to go.

I agree with you about the strong smells. I’m even allergic to some perfumes. There’s one ad on TV here that tells men not to “fade away”. I doubt many of the perfumes would cause that to happen. π — Suzanne

Most smells in purchased items are chemical so they’re not quite right and far too strong π

Coming in late to say I enjoyed this post. Answerable questions for one thing. π
Re: side dishes. Meat, pots, & vegs are the “main course” here; side dishes would be like salads — and North Americans are big on Jello-fruit-whip topping salads — or cranberry sauce. We might call stuffing a “side dish.”
One almost-standard Christmas side dish here is sweet potatoes boiled, then baked in brown sugar sauce. Which I like. but folks nowadays are mashing them with sugar, then sprinkling with cinnamon & maybe nuts. Ends up as sweet mush. Blech!
And it saddens me to hear all the songs labeled as “Christmas” that have nothing to do with Christmas, so many being purely winter songs.

We have stuffing and cranberry sauce but we don’t really regard them as side dishes. For us side dishes are usually extra chips (ie fries), onion rings and the like. Salad too (if it comes separately), but not for Christmas lunch!

I’m not surprised you’re surprised, as most of the people I tell about my distaste for carrots are surprised!
