Sharing My World 17-04-2023
Here is my post for Share Your World, hosted by Di.
Do you have a special talent (ie music, art, singing, dress making, pottery etc).
No, nothing I can think of. More a jack of all trades. Some trades. A couple of trades. No.
What was your best subject at school and was it your favourite?
Either English or Physics. They were both favourites of mine. I always enjoyed writing stories and I ended up doing my degree and PhD in Physics.
That was English Language, mind (in the UK, Language and Literature are separate exams). Shakespeare, Great Expectations etc etc… aargh! I enjoyed my German Literature more, at least they chose fun books to read (mostly).
Do you like to cook?
Not really. I do cook a lot of stuff though, mainly batches of curry, chilli, stuff like that. I like eating the result!
Do you get riled easily?
Riled? Riled? Why are you asking me this, for God’s sake, questions, questions, never-ending questions, it’s enough to make me… ooh! Looks like the answer is “yes”! 😉

I might take it up again. I tailed off when Dad was in and out of hospital and stopped completely when he passed away. See how it goes 🙂

A PhD in physics…awesome! I’m fascinated by physics, but didn’t do well in it at school. On the other hand, I did really well in English and French.
What did you read in German Literature? Anything by Kafka? I love the story Die Verwandlung.

Nothing by Kafka, that might have been a bit advanced 🙂 I’ve read Metamorphosis but in English. In German we read “Sansibar oder der letzte Grund” which was prose, difficult to understand and boring ;-). But we also read a couple of plays which were much easier and more fun – “Die Physiker” and “Biedermann und die Brandstifter”.

Having spent so much time in the venture-capital development world, I was surprised at how many people who got degrees in math and physics were also good writers. It’s would not have been a combination I expected. Especially because anything mathematical was never my best choice. Funny thing though. After I started working, all the math I never learned in school? I learned anyway. And FAST. Needing it to do my job was highly motivating.

Yes, it seems a surprising combination to me too. I hate maths and was never very good at it but obviously I need to know a certain amount!
