Sharing My World 14-09-2026
Here is my post for Share Your World, hosted by Di.
As a child, how did you make extra pocket money?
I don’t recall doing anything to make extra pocket money. I must have been a lazy child, content to be poor 🙂
What did you spend your pocket money on?
The occasional game for my (in those days very basic) computer and records (mostly singles).
Was your first pay packet in cash, cheque or directly into your bank?
I’ve been trying to remember and can’t! It’s very possible it was a cheque that I had to take to the bank. It’s like the Stone Age 🙂 The only person I know who still uses cheques is my Mum, but she’s 90 so she’s allowed.
Have you ever received a discount for paying for something in cash?
No. These days, in my mind, “discount for cash” is synonymous with “please pay cash so there’s no paper trail as I’m not wanting to pay tax on this sale”.

Here, anyway, the banks charge a 3% fee on every transaction made with a card, debit or credit, so that is where the discount comes from. My nail salon, however does not receive tips on a card, it is cash only. I carry cash for tips, but I will sit there and watch people who do not know this squirm. They are apologetic and most will leave to go to the ATM, which they have to drive to, get cash and come back and tip.

Here too, the card issuing schemes (Visa/Mastercard etc) charge a fee, that’s how they make their money. We only tip in the UK for very good service, usually in restaurants.

Yes, our tipping culture is ridiculous.

I haven’t paid cash for anything in quite some time; credit card only. So much easier to keep track of spending. 🙂

I need cash for the village market 🙂 I very rarely use a credit card in a shop though, usually I use a debit card.

Thanks for joining in again this week. I use cash when I shop as much as possible otherwise I’d spend too much. We don’t have credit cards by choice and I have always been one to watch the pennies.

I mostly use credit cards online and a debit in person. However, always a credit card over £100 to benefit from Section 75 protection.

Good point about the purchase protection with a credit card.
