Mondays Finish the Story – Triple Six

It’s time for Mondays Finish the Story – a weekly 100-150 word challenge run by Barbara Beacham where we write a story based on both a photograph and an opening sentence (the opening sentence is free, word-count-wise!).

Sorry if it sounds a wee bit clunky, I had to strip 50 words out :-(. And it’s not very Chrismassy, I’m afraid ๐Ÿ˜ฆ :-(.

Click on the blue frog to see other contributions for this week.

The supplied opening sentence is in bold in my story, which is beneath the photo.

As the year wound down to a close, they gathered around the table and raised their glasses.

โ€œAs is our custom at yearโ€™s end, let us welcome a new member. To Simeon!โ€

Simeon smiled. At last – inducted into the secretive “Order of the Triple Six”!

For years he had made himself useful to the Order. None knew what they did, only that their association made one rich, powerful.

As they toasted his entry, Simeon noticed that the others were sweating, nervous, scared even. As he watched, one of the Order gazed in horror at his drink, then choked, fighting for breath. He fell to the floor, twitching. Blood sprayed from his mouth and he spasmed, face black, eyes staring sightlessly at the ceiling.

Simeon dropped his glass in shock.

โ€œThere can be only Six,โ€ intoned one.

โ€œOne in, one out,โ€ added another.

โ€œBโ€ฆbโ€ฆbut why Triple Six?โ€ stammered Simeon, shocked.

โ€œAh, yes. Triple Six. 666. Why donโ€™t we take you to meet our patron?โ€ smiled a third.

Once again well written, somewhat morbid, and a bit shocking (well not really I’m getting used to it)!!! awesome job. However I do wonder about the way your brain works, Ali my dear. Just saying…

Thanks! Yes, not much Christmas Spirit in evidence (unless you count the contents of the glasses!).
My brain works in ways best not analysed ๐Ÿ™‚
I’m glad you liked it anyway!

Thanks! It was a stroke of luck that there were 7 people in the picture ๐Ÿ™‚
      Happy holidays to you too!

Death by drink seems to be a popular way to end the year.

Oh, your card did arrive in time as well! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • December 24, 2014 at 8:12 am

That would be fun. Like a more civilised version of the Hunger Games. The Thirsty Games we could call it.

    Yikes! Good one!

Ali, He should have researched a bit farther into the triple 6. You don’t mess with that guy. Good, although dark, story and well written. Happy Holidays! ๐Ÿ™‚ — Suzanne

I reckon he tried but they’re pretty much under the radar officially. I think his only way out now is to be unlucky next year ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
Glad you liked it (even if it wasn’t exactly very Christmassy!).
      Happy holidays to you too!

Great story, you could really twist it if their patron was Santa but he really works for the tax bureau during the off season ๐Ÿ™‚

    • December 25, 2014 at 6:50 am

That sounds fun. Ah, for 100 more words…
I always wondered what he did the rest of the year ๐Ÿ™‚
