Merby’s Beatles Competition!

Merbear over at Knocked Over by a Feather is having a competition! Thanks for the timely reminder about that today, Mer!

Merbear is a huge Beatles fan, and her challenge is to do a post based on one of several snippets of Beatles lyrics she has supplied. I have chosen this one, from “Across the Universe”. This song has now been stuck in my head all day!

Words are flowing out like
Endless rain into a paper cup
They slither wildly as they slip away across the universe.
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
Are drifting through my opened mind
Possessing and caressing me

I thought I’d take you back in time, back to 1960s Liverpool to watch two of the Fab Four at work as they come up with these lyrics. Imagine Flower Power. Imagine free love, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and whacked out hippies. Let’s drop in on John and (not yet Sir) Paul and see what’s going on, shall we?

(Cue spooky music and swirly effect so we all know we’re going back in time…)

“I can’t think of a new song. The words keep slipping away from me, like all the way across the universe, man.”

“Hey, that’ll do for a title. ‘Across the Universe’. Profound. Take a toke on this and see if it helps.”

(Puff puff)

“So what do you see?”

“Wow. Colours. Lights. Rain falling into a paper cup.”

“Yeah! And there’s words too. Slithering around the place.”

“We can work with that. What else?”

“There’s sorrow and joy in pools and waves, man.”

“Good, good…”

“My mind’s all, like, open, and it’s caressing me and all sorts…”

“Yes, yes, very sensual, I like it.”

“And then it’s all like ‘goo goo g’joob’.”

“Always with the walrus. What’s the matter with you?”

“Sorry, man.”

(Cue swirly effect again…)

And thus, “Across the Universe” was born. Thank you for your time.

You know… that is almost too true to be funny, lol. Were you in the room with them? 😉 😆

Why did I read that in Cheech and Chong’s voices?

    • March 26, 2015 at 8:01 pm

Heh heh. That would work 🙂 If only they were Liverpudlian.

Smoke enough from that magic pipe and they will probably all sound alike 😀

  3. March 26, 2015 at 9:18 pm

Oh now, that’s going to be hard to beat! But you know, nothing personal, I’m going to try to beat it! LOL That’s was pretty cool man. 😉

Far out, dude! I really dig this scene.

  5. March 26, 2015 at 9:58 pm

This really made me smile! Great stuff. 😀

Love this so much…it has everything…a drawing, humor, drugs, John, not quite yet (sir) Paul and drugs! This is on top of my list so far! Makes me smile and laugh! Thanks DM…perhaps my book shall be yours! 😀

Yeah, I know! I thought it was deliberate 🙂

Goo goo g’joob described the state of my brain today.

    • March 27, 2015 at 8:10 am

That’s the state of my brain most days. They were onto something with the “walrus song”.

  9. March 27, 2015 at 5:38 am

    Far out, man. 🙂

    very funny 😀

I think this was the creative process behind every Beatles song. I wonder how George and Ringo occupied their time while all this was going on….?

    • March 27, 2015 at 9:07 am

I think it might well have been. I expect George and Ringo had their own pipe, though they wrote fewer songs so their weed probably wasn’t such good quality.

      • March 27, 2015 at 9:09 am

How rude of John and Paul to bogart the good stuff! The other two were probably smoking a potted fern for all they knew…

Wow it’s even been illustrated- what can I say, I’m tripping out of my yellow submarine- it was that good :p

The DraliDoodles team (that’s me!) pulled out all the stops for this one 🙂

It’s practically ‘cover illustration’ material :p

  14. March 28, 2015 at 5:03 am

That was real cool man. I’m glad though that we finally got out of that smokey room. Nice to know something lasting came from it. That was a wild trip, Ali. 🙂

    • March 28, 2015 at 4:17 pm

It was pretty smoky but the end result was a great song! Glad you liked it 🙂

I read the whole thing with a silent Liverpool accent. Ah the old days when love was all you needed….peace man. 😀

    • March 28, 2015 at 4:20 pm

I always think of the 60s as a “simplier, happier, freer time” but I’m sure they had the same problems as we do now.
I wrote it with a Liverpudlian accent 🙂

  16. March 28, 2015 at 9:12 am

MOL 😀 I never knew that it was so easy, Draliman, now I can make my own song. In fact I only need three words Love Peace and Power…and a little Catnip 😀 Pawkisses for a Hippie Weekend 🙂 ❤

    • March 28, 2015 at 4:20 pm

Chomp on a bit of catnip and your masterpiece will be ready in no time 🙂
