MFTS: Reboot – Earth 2.0
Here is my contribution to Barbara Beacham’s Mondays Finish the Story. We get a photo and an opening sentence (which is in bold in my story). Then we have 150 words or so to finish the story. The opening sentence this week was contributed by Eric Wickland of Momus News.
Click on the blue froggy for this week’s other contributions.
At first, it looked like an ordinary marble, but it was far from it.
Merrax opened the protective covering to reveal a small blue and green globe. He handed it to the planetary mechanic (No Planet Too Small – Call Now!).
“Hmm, yes, funny smell coming from this,” said the mechanic.
Merrax nodded. “I popped some two-legged creatures on there for a science project and now it smells real bad.”
“Yep,” said the mechanic knowingly. “They’ve stunk the place up. Gases, oils, chemicals… expensive to fix.” His eyes gleamed.
“Isn’t there a cheap option?” asked Merrax. His mum was going to be so mad.
“Well,” said the mechanic. “We could reboot the whole… “
“Earth,” said Merrax.
“Whatever. Start anew. Wipe it all off. Much cheaper.”
Merrax had a think. “We’ll do that,” he decided.
“No worries.” The mechanic popped Earth in a machine and pressed a button. If you listened carefully, you could hear the screams of the dying emanating from the little globe.
“There you go, just like new!” said the mechanic. “Factory reset. Earth 2.0!”
I wish it was that easy to clean earth.

I love your little stories. You have such a huge imagination. I always have to wonder “where did he get this idea from?” But I figure it’s just Drali-brain 🙂

That could be a condition – “he’s suffering from Dralibrain” 🙂
I don’t know where I get my ideas from either, they just arrive. I’m glad you like them!

Haha I love it. The next time I blurt out something that even remotely sounds like one of your stories I’m going to say I’m afflicted with Dralibrain… (Can’t say suffering, as there’s none of that going on.)

Yay, it could become a “thing”. Fame at last 🙂

I hope we do better with 2.0 than we did with 1.0. Maybe we’ll make less of a mess second time around. Of course, it won’t BE us.

There might not be any two-legs this time around – once bitten, twice shy.

Wasn’t there a Beta 2.0 version? I didn’t get to test it.

It was rubbish. You know how it is when they “improve” the user interface. And the mountains were all pixelated.

It’s aways a “feature” and never a “bug” in those Beta releases.

Dilbert just developed an app that notifies you 5 minutes before you die. No much interest from advertisers.
Hey! There’s an idea for a future post!

Would that be Chad Merrax, perhaps? Or maybe Brad?
All kidding aside this was good!

Ali – you have such an amazing imagination! I love this story! The reference to them stinking up the place with gases, oils and chemicals? Priceless! Thanks again for another clever contribution to the MFtS challenge. Be well my friend… ^..^

Nice one. I love the healthy dose of humour the story comes with. When I first saw the title I thought we went with the same idea, but I couldn’t be more wrong… 🙂

I just read yours, a great “traditional” sci-fi short story, as in the sort of thing one might find in a sci-fi compilation 🙂

how about trying for entirely herbivorous species this time? Everything holding hands/paws and skipping in harmony as they share plants. ❤

Let’s hope Earth 2.0 hasn’t got the glitches that say, Microsoft Vista did. 🙂
Personally, I’m for a reboot that leaves the 2 legged creatures as extinct. What goes around comes around.
Great humourous take on the prompt!
LikeLike
If it’s anything like Vista it’ll need to be twice as big to do only half as much, none of the drivers will be compatible with the cars and the trees will keep falling over (yes, my old laptop “runs” Vista!) 🙂
I’m glad you liked it!
