MTFS – What Could It Be?
Here is my contribution to Barbara Beacham’s Mondays Finish the Story. We get a photo, 150 words and an opening sentence, which is in bold in my story.
This week’s other stories can be found by clicking the blue froggy.
I have no idea what this photo is. Maybe the DraliFiction team have an idea? Let’s listen in…
“I see absolutely everything.”
“Well, I see absolutely nothing. What the hell is it?”
“Dunno. Could be a lizard, maybe? Or a fish?”
“Hmm, let’s see. A fishy story. Let’s brainstorm some titles. ‘Close Encounters of the Fishy Kind’.”
“’Rebel without a fish’.”
“’Live and Let Fish’.”
“Ha ha!”
“Ha ha! Or maybe it’s an alien?”
“What, like, ‘insert-name-here’ sneaks across the border, and pursued by police his only chance to survive is…”
“A space alien, dumbass.”
“I seriously doubt our Babs got an actual photo of an actual space alien. We would’ve heard. There would’ve been news stories, failed attempts to communicate, exploding cities, the last vestiges of humanity struggling to survive in a broken world and whatnot.”
“So we’re back to ‘fish’, then?”
“’Spose so. Typing fingers on standby? This is gonna be epic.”
“Ready to go! Bring on the epic.”
“Righty-ho… ‘Once upon a time there was a fish named Pete’…”
“Awesome opening, mate!”
ha ha fish it is! Clever take! 🙂

Could be a fish indeed.. 🙂

Hey, no one got killed or splattered. I liked it anyway.
I agree with the above, cute and cleaver.

I chose fish, and wrote my piece around it. Lots of folks see a dog though? Don”t know how, but hey to each his own. 🙂 Enjoyed your piece! I’m sure when Barbara shares with us the true beast, we’ll all be surprised!

A lizard, maybe. I don’t see a dog. I hope we do find out what it is! If we don’t we’ll all have to get a petition together to get to the truth.

LOL Ali! How did you know? About the fish that is? Be well and thanks for another excellent story…. ^..^

You mean it really is a fish? It’s a strange one (or a strange angle!).

Kidding…it is a knot in a tree and I rotated the photo… 🙂

Ah, some people did guess at “knot in a tree”. That never even occurred to me but I see it now 🙂

The tree is a Madrone. 🙂

Never heard of it, but I looked it up. Nice looking tree!

Great story! You chose fish and now I believe you are right! (Even before I read Barb’s comment). After all, she is the Salmon Fishing Queen! LOL

The first thing I thought of when I saw that pic was Barnes and Barnes’ video for “Fish Heads”, so I agree, it’s a fish!

The “fishes” have it by the looks of it. A fish by popular demand.

Oh you did this so smartly! Great way of incorporating this picture of god knows what into a story… Niftily done! 🙂

Thanks! I even zoomed in on it and still wasn’t sure what it was! I’m glad you liked it 🙂

Sounds like the process you really went through with that picture and sentence. That’s an odd one, kind of creepy. It looks like leaves on top, so maybe it’s one of those strange walking fish. Well done, Ali.

That’s exactly what happened in my head! It does look like leaves which is why I thought maybe it’s a lizard instead.

hahaha you got Babs also as a character. Loved it.

Quirky and enjoyable. When I first looked at the picture, I thought it was the limb of a tree or perhaps its trunk with a knot in the wood that looks like an eye — one that someone has painted blue.

That could be it as well! Quite an intriguing photo this week. Glad you liked my story!

A very clever take on the prompt, Ali! You never know, all those stories that Babs has written about alien abductions could be based on real events and it could be a picture of one of her aliens! 🙂

If it is a fish, it is a fishy one, indeed. I’d go for a tree with a knot, – it reminds me of a creepy wooden statue of a devil I once saw. Great dialogue, Ali. Really made me chuckle.

I hadn’t thought of that, but another person thought it might be a knot in wood as well. Looking at it again I think it probably is.
I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Nicely done! Maybe it’s an alien fish?

Yeah, I like that. Let’s combine all the theories and go for “wood-based alien fish-lizard” 🙂
