“Hurry, they’re coming, string the barbed wire!”
(twang)
“Connect it to the generator and flip the switch!”
(crackle bzzzzzzz)
“I can see them now, freaks, horns, demons! They’ll take everything, nothing is safe, no-one is safe. Inside, quickly! Close the door, lock it. We have seconds, scant seconds! Turn out the light.”
(click)
“Behind the sofa, everyone. They mustn’t see us, they mustn’t see us… they’re here, oh God, they’re here… shhhhh…”
(clomp clomp clomp…)
“TRICK OR TREAT!”

Haha … Trick or treat in April? Looks like their April fool’s spirit hasn’t died yet.
Great narrative with a great twist 🙂

I’m not buying it. Sounds like demon trickery to me. It’s not Halloween. They were right to hide. Bad things are comin’ I tell ya. Bad things! 🙂

You could be right. They’d better stay quiet!

Exactly! Plus, if there’s candy, they don’t have to share it. 🙂

Great ending! Electrified wire might be a bit of an extreme reaction to trick-or-treaters but I wouldn’t mind having some to keep door to door salesman away!
LikeLike
They got past the wire anyway – very tricky, these trick or treaters!

Wonderful, Ali. 🙂 Trick or treaters are definitely to be defended against! A very amusing story.

OMG! Literary adjustment. it takes a big woman to admit her wrong and I am not a big woman but I was WRONG! I was going to respond to your very entertaining story with “shh something wicked this way comes” and I was reading about my hero Ray Bradbury and it turns out it was a quote from MacBeth! However Mr B is still responsible for popularising the phase. We all must have heard that witchy\hag song many times!
To save confusion and sorry to be so wordy, my comment is ‘that just might take on, and not only at Halloween. Bwa ha ha!”
LikeLike
Ah, so it was Shakespeare via Bradbury 🙂
Yeah, these defences would be useful in all sorts of door-to-door situations!

I know! Sometimes I get a tiny bit annoyed about getting constantly interrupted. As my boy would say “ooh your life is sooo hard Mummy” 😀

Haha! You had me! Totally thought – as you intended – that this was a post-apolcalyptic / Zombie-horror fest. A trick with a lovely treat at the end! Nice, breathless build up – well constructed 🙂

I’m glad you liked it! I thought maybe people would think (it being me) that there would be carnage. Of course, I’m also known for a bit of a twist now and then 🙂

It sounds like they’re hiding because, horror of horrors. they ran out of candy, it’s late, and the bigger kids are coming.
Hilarious, Ali. I loved the sound effects. 😀 — Suzanne

This is the first time I’ve read one of your flash fiction stories where I knew exactly where it was going before it got to the twist ending. Ha! Couldn’t fool me this time! 😛

Even my twists are becoming predictable!
Maybe a double twist… they open the door to hand out sweets only to get their throats ripped out because they’re actually demons after all…
