Sharing My World 2016 Week 28

Here is my post for Cee’s Share Your World. This week’s questions were supplied by Emilio.

What is your earliest memory?
Memories are funny things. Sometimes I have a memory only to discover by various means that it never actually happened, or at least not the way I remember.

That said, I think my earliest memories are from around age 3/4/5. They’re from a house we moved out of when I was 5 so I know it was around then. Just vague snippets of my brother’s birthday and waiting for his name to be mentioned on the TV programme “Gus Honeybun’s Magic Birthdays” (Gus was a puppet who would do a handstand or whatever the person who wrote in asked for).

What was the last photo you took with your phone?
Upon checking it’s the picture of the cake I baked which I already posted here, so here’s the second-last picture I took (for my Instagram feed).

So... how do I get up in the cockpit then? Ladder? Anyone?

Have you ever danced in the rain?
I don’t dance. It’s better for everyone that way.

What is the longest you have gone without sleep?
While doing my PhD I pulled a few all-nighters in the lab, so I guess that would be around 30 hours or so. We had an experiment which needed constant attention and readings taken every 45 minutes or so as we gradually raised the temperature from -200C to 80C.

That’s put to shame by the 42 hours I went without food a couple of years ago. I just never got round to eating. Didn’t do me any harm!

Gus must be special because not many puppets can do handstands without exposing their master or strangling themselves in their strings…

So now we know where global warming is coming from…. aliens are doing an experiment on our planet and are gradually raising the temperature every 45 minutes!

Yeah, I never wondered at the time, but how did he do it? How?

Those alien experiments… um, I was an unwitting participant. Sorry about the glaciers and all.

Hahaha! I don’t dance either – for the same reason. LOL!

There’s always dancing lessons! I remember falling into the water feeding the ducks and my Dad saved me. I don’t know how since he could not swim. I think I was 3 yrs. old. I guess he could have taken swimming lessons!

Wow, good job your dad was on the ball the day.
I don’t think dancing lessons would help, sadly 😦

Thanks for not dancing. 😀 You can just shout for joy. 😀

I sort of forget about the all-nighters in college … not to mention to all nighters with the colicky baby, sick dogs, ailing friends or family. Maybe I should try remembering the last really good night’s sleep. That might be easier 🙂

I also do not dance. Definitely better for everyone.

I really miss all-nighters. Me and one of the other PhD students used to have a good laugh, getting in pizza, mucking about with liquid nitrogen to cool down our fizzy drinks…

Dancing in the rain in great fun – you just have to make sure there’s nobody watching! When I was at uni all-nighters were the norm, though not usually for study purposes… I became very nocturnal during those years. 🙂 When holidays came round and I had to go home I’d just not go to bed for a day so I could shift back into the sleep patterns of home.

Uni time is party time 🙂
I’m not risking a dance in the rain. Knowing my luck it would be on YouTube ten minutes later 😦

I guess if people don’t dance they don’t. My son won’t dance or sing. He sang when young and has a good voice. I guess he’s self-conscious. With my poor coordination, it’s a wonder I could dance or type. It was through sheer determination and need (typing).

I’m glad you persevered with your typing 🙂
I only sing when I’m alone!

I don’t remember Gus Honeybun on TV, but I probably wasn’t into kid’s telly at the time you were that age. He sounds a very clever little laddie, though. As for all-nighters, I’ve had a few in my time – but mostly due to bawling babies keeping me up all night. I hope you had your matchsticks with you when you did that experiment. Dancing is great for the feel-good factor, but it isn’t for everyone. A nice long walk is just as good. 🙂

We always used to watch Gus Honeybun! I think he was only on Westward/Television South West, though 😦
I would definitely be up for a walk rather than the dancing.

Your first answer is pretty profound, Dr. Ali! It took me a long while to realize that (human) memory, specifically mine, can be very faulty. Too bad you don’t like dancing; it’s good exercise (not saying you need that). I do it for the fun of it (usually in private), and no doubt look like the uncoordinated, grace-less person I am! I embrace my own foibles and shortcomings, long tho the list may be!

I can think of a few times I was convinced something had happened only to find out years later it hadn’t. My very old memories generally have my preferred ending rather than what actually happened. Rose-tinted glasses and all that 🙂
Maybe I should try some solo dancercise!

    42 hours without food sounds like a plan… 😉

I bet that long without food screws up the metabolism, mind!

Don’t you hate it when you begin processing a memory as then realize most of it was made-up-in-your-mind or by the retelling of the stories of that memory….The Eye of the Beholder is not always ‘real’????

My Mum usually puts me right – or is it her memory which is incorrect? Yeeks!
