Sharing My World 2015 Week 51 Holiday Edition
Here is my post for Cee’s Share Your World series.
What is your favourite holiday?
Christmas, I guess. There are only two, really. Christmas and Easter. Unless you count Bank Holidays, and they’re just days off work.
What types of food is associated with your holiday?
The traditional turkey and trimmings. I always buy some nice cheese and meat. And there’s always lots of chocolate of course. If you get through Christmas without putting on at least 10lbs it’s not really Christmas, is it?
I found this year that I have made a “terrible miscalculation”. After wrapping everything, I find that I “accidentally” bought far too many boxes of chocolates and chocolate biscuits.
What a mistake to make. I guess I’ll just have to suck it up and eat them all myself. Bwahahaha nom nom nom.
Do you travel for your holiday?
I’m off to my parents’ later today and then to my brother’s. They all live in town about 2 miles apart, and about 10 miles from me.
Is it a religious or spiritual holiday?
Religious, I guess. The early Christian Church decided it needed a day to celebrate Jesus’ birthday. Since nobody knows quite when He was born, the Church chose the feast of Saturnalia in what is now called “December”, hoping, I guess, that the pagans would gradually come across to Christianity since they were having a bit of a knees up around that time anyway.
Is there a gift exchange?
Oh yes indeedy π
How long does the celebration last?
For me, a day or so. For the shops, from just after Halloween (so early November) until around mid-January. At that point the shops switch to Easter-mode and start filling the shelves with Easter bunnies.
Merry Christmas everybody π
Merry Christmas!

What, the shops don’t do Valentine’s Day over there? That’s one of the Big Five retail holidays. The bunnies can’t go out until all of the chocolate and candy hearts are off the shelves in mid February…

Oh yeah, I forgot about Valentine’s Day. The shops would die a death if they had to wait all the way from Christmas to Easter without being able to sell “special things”.

Merry Christmas! Wish I could say I gained 10 pounds this year but I caught a stomach bug on Christmas Eve and spent 80%+ of Christmas in bed feeling miserable. My “feast” consisted of about 5 crackers and a few sips of Gatorade.

Oh no. If there’s ever a time of year you don’t want that happening, it’s Christmas π¦ You’re probably the only person who actually lost weight.
I hope you’re feeling better now.

Yeah, it was a pretty rough Christmas for me. Feeling mostly better now though. I can at least eat again so that’s a plus. Another day or two and I’ll hopefully be back to normal. Until then I’m afraid you’re on your own with the chocolates.

I don’t think the knees up tradition’s ever changed. It comes with having an excess of sugar in the bloodstream after munching through the mounds of chocolate we ‘accidentally’ bought. Enjoy it while you can! A good knees up does everyone the world of good. A belated Merry Christmas, Ali. π

LOL just don’t eat all the chocs and biscuits in one sitting π Went to my youngest daughter’s place yesterday for second Christmas. My five grandchildren (ages 2-15) were upset because Daddy forgot to make Yorkshire Pudding and stuffing. The fact that he cooked enough roast veg to feed an army, along with pork, lamb, turkey, plus greens AND mashed potatoes wasn’t enough. He actually made them after we’d had lunch so they’d have them for dinner with leftovers π He’s a pome from Nottingham.

Wow, that sounds like quite a feast! And “second Christmas” too! We’ll be having another Christmas meal on New Year’s Day over at my parents’, as my brother was with his girlfriend’s family on Christmas Day.
I hope you enjoyed yourself π

I hope you had a great time with your parents and brother! Were/are the chocolate and biscuits good? How about the DW special? I still haven’t watched it, although I’ve seen a part of the Dalek cartoon thing . . . Anyway, stay well, Ali!

The DW special was quite good, but there have been better Christmas specials.
Take care!
