Sharing My World 22-04-2024
Here is my post for Share Your World, hosted by Di.
Have you ever attended a First Aid Course?
I went to one years ago for work so I could be one of the nominated first aiders. Just the very basic course.
Apart from grazed knees and applying a band aid, have you ever applied First Aid?
No. No grazed knees, either.
Are you squeamish about the sight of blood?
No. In fact I had a blood test on Monday and I watched the needle go in and the blood spurt into the little plastic receptacles.
How far away is the nearest hospital?
The main big hospital for my county is about 12 miles maybe but via a lot of speed-limited areas so maybe 30 minutes outside of rush hour, 45 at busy times. An ambulance would get there a lot faster, though!
There’s a little post-op recuperation-type hospital in Newquay about the same distance, and a hospital with a minor injuries unit about the same distance as well.

Your nearest hospital is pretty far away then!

Yes, that’s what I get living in a little village equidistant from all the main towns!

You watched the needle go in? Yikes!

I usually look away from that bit but I wondered how I’d react if I watched. Fortunately I didn’t keel over 🙂

Reading this post made me squeamish. Please call an ambulance…

I did wonder if you’d be okay reading it, after seeing your post. I called an ambulance, it’s on its way to the boat now, it’ll be with you in about three weeks.

Isn’t phlebotomist a funny word when you study it? And a funny career choice!

Yes, doesn’t sound anything like what it is to my non-medical ears. I didn’t even know the word until a few years ago when my friend’s wife started in that role alongside her surgery reception duties.

Thanks for joining in. We have a UTC 17 miles in one direction and 20 in the other, but our nearest A&E is 28 miles away. I can get there in 40 minutes provided there is no traffic and not the school run, otherwise it’s 50 minutes.
You are braver than me watching the needle go in as I have to look away. The nurse and I always joke about good vintage!

I had a quick Google for UTCs in Cornwall – there’s just one all the way down in Penzance! If I was to drive all the way down there, it had better not be “urgent”!

So many grazed knees when learning to ride a bicycle! :D The upside; not squeamish about blood. I had a First Aid course in school so when I almost cut part of my finger off as I attempted to fix an antique plate, it came in very handy. (no pun intended :D)

Yikes, that sounds nasty. I’d probably faint and bleed to death.

Maybe I should have put a warning on my post 😮
